This is a view from Arnside promenade looking north-westwards over the Kent estuary towards Limegarth Wood and Sunnyside Farm (centre right).

Taken just a few days before the summer solstice, the sun sets a long way round to the north-west.

Whitbarrow Scar is the west-facing cliff-like escarpment above which is a fascinating landscape of Carboniferous Limestone crags and limestone pavements at the south-east margin of the Lake District National Park. This portion of Whitbarrow Scar is also known as Chapel Head Scar.

One of the classic viewpoints for Great Langdale and the Langdale Pikes, taken from the Harry Place footpath just above Copt How.

This particular day was very warm, humid and rather hazy, with the sun periodically breaking through gaps in the clouds. On this occasion the valley floor was richly, though fleetingly, illuminated.

The path here and behind the camera location is fairly narrow and there is a near-vertical drop to the right, not very far perhaps, but sufficient to potentially cause serious injury in the event of a fall. The exposed section is only a few yards long however, and the path soon becomes comfortably clear of the edge as it rises up towards the summit of Side Pike.

The path visible beyond the squeeze leads eastwards to Lingmoor Fell.

A view of the compact rocky dome of Side Pike (1187 ft) taken from the western end of Lingmoor Fell; Bowfell on the distant skyline and the Langdale Pikes on the right. Lingmoor Fell separates the valleys of Great and Little Langdale, and although of only modest height (1530 ft), it has great charm everywhere and lovely views of higher fells all around.

A closer view of Side Pike at the western end of Lingmoor Fell, Great Langdale. The western slopes of Side Pike are relatively gentle and descend to the valley floor and Blea Tarn, but the to the east of the summit is a wall of crags, as shown here. There is just one chink in this armour which allows ordinary fell walkers descending from Lingmoor Fell to gain access to Side Pike's summit without having to lose height and approach it from the west. The chink involves a tight squeeze (see note) behind a flake of rock leading on to flat shelf (visible on the far left in the photo) followed by a curving path up to Side Pike's summit.

Curiously, this route is not mentioned at all by Wainwright (Book 4, The Southern Fells, Lingmoor Fell p. 6) who regarded Side Pike as inaccessible from this direction.

Sunlit fields in Eskdale and a nice sky.

Taken en route to Harter Fell from the footpath from Jubilee Bridge. The view direction is westerly, with the Irish Sea not too far away. The clouds only start to build up over the higher fells (see next photo taken at the same time).

More cloudscapes and sunlit fields again, this time at Brotherikeld ('Booterilket') farm in Eskdale. The farm and lands date back to at least the 13th century.

En route to Harter Fell, this view is looking back down the path from the Jubilee Bridge, hidden in the trees. Bowfell is a shapely pyramid from this side, visible in the centre distance. The Scafells are hidden in cloud to the left.

Wallhead Crag, Harter Fell

The western end of Harter Fell is guarded by Wallhead Crag, but fortunately the footpath skirts round the southern (right-hand) side and ascends to the summit without too much difficulty.

There are two Harter Fells in the Lake District; this is the Eskdale one. The other is in the far eastern fells, overlooking Haweswater.

The classic view of Grasmere in the Lake District, viewed from the 'Grasmere Cairn' on the northern flank of Loughrigg Fell.

Clouds are sweeping in from the west (left) ahead of a warm front associated with an advancing depression. It started to rain a few hours after this photo was taken and continued for the next 24 hours. Typical Lake District weather, really.

View northwards towards the Scafells from the summit of Harter Fell. We were just about on a level with the cloud base, alternately being enclosed in rushing mist and then in bright sunshine, which gave a wonderful depth and dynamic feel to the scene.

Having bypassed Wallhead Crag via a steep zig-zag ascent, a short section of easy walking over grass gives a pleasant respite before the final steeper stretch to the summit.

Harter Fell is a delight and is one of Jan's favourites.

In the background, Eskdale leads down past Muncaster Fell to Ravenglass and the sea.

Harter Fell has three rocky summits: west, middle and east. The middle one is the highest (2140 ft), the western summit bears the OS trig. point.

In the middle distance, Green Crag is in shadow, Devoke Water is visible just left of centre. To the right, Eskdale opens out towards Ravenglass and the Irish Sea.

The Ordnance Survey column on the west summit of Loughrigg Fell in the Lake District.

Loughrigg is another of Lakeland's fells of only modest elevation, but is full of interest and charm and with good views all round.

The Langdale Pikes are in silhouette on the left, just a sliver of Grasmere visible just left of centre, Dunmail Raise and the Thirlmere valley just right of centre with Lonscale Fell visible in the far distance; Seat Sandal and Fairfield visible on the right.

A day on the Langdale Pikes - Photo 3

Taken from the same location as the previous Gimmer Crag photo. This is a panoramic view southwards down to the valley floor. Great Langdale splits to the west (right) into the twin valleys of Oxendale and Mickleden, separated by the ridge of The Band, rising up from Stool End farm (0.6, 0.3). Blea Tarn and the pass to Little Langdale are on the left, Wetherlam and the Coniston Fells on the far skyline, Pike o' Blisco in shadow on the nearer skyline overlooking Oxendale.

Constructed from two photos stitched together using Canon's Photostitch software.

A day on the Langdale Pikes - Photo 1

On our last day in Langdale we decided to revist all the Langdale Pikes. The weather was intermittent cloud and sunlit patches and very windy on the tops and ridges.

This photo shows the start of our route up the little scree slope behind the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel (wonderful Jennings bitter!). Great Langdale is illuminated by a rapidly moving patch of sunlight - a feature that was to characterise the entire day. Across the valley are Lingmoor Fell and Side Pike.

Note the helicopter at (0.7, 0.3). It was being used to transport sacks of stone up on to the fells for use in footpath repair.
