The Denali Highway, which opened in 1957, was the first road to access Denali National Park. It is 135 miles long, of which only approximately 24 miles are paved and the remaining 111 miles are gravel. The scenery along its course is spectacular and well worth the bumpy ride.

Known also as brown bears on the coast, Denali grizzlies can have brown to blond coats and weigh up to 600 pounds. This bear had been digging for roots. Denali grizzlies eat roots, vegetation, ground squirrels and caribou.

The park road had just opened for the season and the animals had not yet been scared away from it by the traffic. They were not plentiful, but they were visible with their newborns.
