I started out with my usual group, but ended up staying at the second location with several photographers that I had met up with. The birds were high up and quite a distance away, but I am posting my photos because the two birds are in different surroundings compared to various previous images of these teeny owls. Remember that they are only the size of a popcan, so when they are far away, that blob of brown is VERY small, LOL! Often, I can't really even see which way the bird is facing, so it is rather hit and miss as far as photos are concerned.

These little birds were going crazy this afternoon and I had to delete quite a few photos, so this image is appreciated! I wonder if birds can be near- or short-sighted. One kept pecking hard at my finger tip - much more powerful than these little beaks look! The word "consolation" came out of the fact that I went to the park in the hope of seeing the tiny Northern Pygmy-owl again. I was out of luck, but a gentleman did see it briefly when I was off walking through the trees.

On the rare occasion that I do see one, usually they are far, far away.

"The Redhead (Aythya americana) is a medium-sized diving duck, 37 cm long with an 84 cm wingspan.

The adult male has a blue bill, a red head and neck, a black breast, yellow eyes and a grey back. The adult female has a brown head and body and a darker bluish bill with a black tip.

The breeding habitat is marshes and prairie potholes in western North America. Loss of nesting habitat has led to sharply declining populations. Females regularly lay eggs in the nests of other Redheads or other ducks, especially Canvasbacks. Redheads usually take new mates each year, starting to pair in late winter." From Wikipedia.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redhead_(duck)

Flickr friend Jim (Garnite) desperately needs all the healing vibes he can possibly get at the moment, lying in ICU in Vancouver General Hospital. Jim had yet another setback yesterday (apparently, this was the third time they didn't think he was going to make it), but news that I read late last night said he had suddenly improved in a few different ways. Still a long, slow way to go - this journey is certainly a roller coaster ride for both Jim and Linda. Healing vibes coming your way, JIm!

The one they had in the old Conservatory was a much bigger shrub and the flowers were red, but maybe this small one will simply grow bigger?

Just got back home from a very quick trip to a local park - well, it was quick getting there, but, oh boy, I must have caught rush hour on the way home. Had great fun watching a Porcupine that was up in a Spruce tree, nibbling on the branches. A real treat!

I was wearing bright red, fleece mitts when we got out of the car occasionally to call in at someone's homestead. I thought this tiny snowflake was SO gorgeous, looking (to me) rather like a diamond ear-stud. If only I could have brought it home with me (LOL) so that I could try to photograph it properly with my macro lens and table-top tripod! The light snow today had no beautiful flakes, just tiny specks of white : (. Lyn (and Howard), if you happen to see this sometime, it's to say "Thank you" for the all-day ride yesterday. You, too, Dorothy (and Stephen), for getting me to and from the Count meeting place! Rebecca, you might like this one, too? : )

Oh, and by the way, I'm not interested in real diamonds (not "me" at all!) - only the kind that fall from heaven : )

A few of us had gone over to this side of the Bow River (across from the east end of Fish Creek Park) in the hopes of seeing the elusive Snow Goose that had been reported in the area. I think the temperature was only around -14C, but it felt more like -30C, especially when standing in one spot for a long time. No sign of the Snow Goose that day, but some of us were lucky enough to see it on 5th January.

I guess it must have been cold, snowy weather that forced me to give in to temptation and buy a bunch of three sunflowers from Safeway : ) The snow that was in our forecast for a few days seems to have passed us by so far, thank goodness. It has been a beautiful, sunny day today, somewhere around 0C, I think. We went for a walk in Fish Creek Park and it was very pleasant weather for walking. I saw two male Ring-necked Pheasants as I drove into the east end of the park. They were pecking at something on the small road and then decided to attack each other : ) Nothing serious, though. Checked on the two sets of Great Horned Owls. One female is tucked down inside a tree, but one eye and an ear tuft can be seen through a very small, high-up hole. She looks so cozy in there : ) At the other nest site, the female was sitting up higher at the top of her tree stump. Up till now, she has been out of sight, lower in the cavity. We also saw an Eurasian Wigeon on the Bow River, rare during migration - these ducks do not nest in Alberta.

"Honey bees are essential for production of over 90 food crops. In 2006, for unknown reasons, honey bee colonies suddenly began to die across the U.S. from a phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). These losses severely threaten the honey, pollination and major food growing industries, which is why researchers are looking for causes and remedies.

By planting, watching and recording the bees at sunflowers in your garden, you can help us understand the challenges that bees are facing. Please go to Plant and be counted with Great Sunflower Project and find out how you can help." From the Super Eco group and website.
