Carferry Chief Wawatam, that is, though long after the Chief retired. Before things fell in, and before they built a park on the pier. That's the backside of Mackinac Grille in the background; photo taken from the Wawatam Light. 6/17/2011.

I like the park. I wish they'd saved the structure.

I wanted something more cheerful after watching the snow all day, so here's some color from September of 2010.

The east arm of Grand Traverse Bay, from the Pointes North Inn (room 309, as it happens). The stretch of beach with no buildings is the state park.

We generally head north for Joan's birthday. We've stayed in several towns over the years but Traverse City's been our usual landing place. By late September the bay's sails have mostly taken shelter, but the town's still host to many tourists.

This view, from last fall's excursion, is from the Holiday Inn's waterfront. It captures much of what we like about Traverse City, and about northern Michigan in general.
