During the work traffic movement was controlled by temporary traffic lights. This was the scene in the High Street by Manor Court shops with New Street to the right.

Eastern Counties Omnibus Company LL793 (OEX 793W) passes through the works whilst working the 1242 Newmarket to Thetford service 200. It was a Willowbrook bodied Leyland Leopard that was new to ECOC as a National Express liveried coach in October 1980. In the ECOC split of 1984 it moved to Ambassador Travel (Anglia) Limited and then, when it became too old for National Express work, it returned to ECOC and continued its days on bus service work.

This Eastern Counties Omnibus Company bus had got on soft earth on the road from Mildenhall to Barton Mills and slowly toppled over into the adjacent ditch. I was told that everyone got out safely and I assume the standing people were the passengers. The conductor can be seen among the crowd. The bus was an Eastern Coachworks bodied Bristol Lodekka which was working the Beck Row-Mildenhall-Bury St Edmunds service numbered 213 at the time and later became service 974. The scene here is rather different today. The field behind the people is where Lyon House and Stanton House now stand. The field and the line of trees border the lane leading to The Grange which joins the public road on the bend just above the roof of the bus.

This was the terminus of the regular service 974 from Bury St. Edmunds via Flempton, Lackford and Mildenhall. At the time of this photograph there was just one single trip on Saturdays numbered 975 which departed Bury St. Edmunds at 1740 travelling via Risby, Cavenham Cross Roads and then to the A1101 at Lackford where it turned left for Icklingham – a hybrid of service 970 and 974. The United States Air Force has been based at RAF Mildenhall for many years and the building on the left was the Starlift Cafeteria operated by AAFES (Army and Air Force Exchange Service).

This photograph shows VR194 (TEX 404R) (May 1977), RL709 (TPW 709G) (April 1969) and VR165 (MCL 941P) (February 1976) which would all leave around 1615 when a number of various services departed with homeward bound shoppers. The clock tower of Moyses Hall Museum casts a shadow in the bottom left hand corner. All are Eastern Coachworks bodied Bristol chassis of the types indicated in the fleet numbers (RL = RELL).
