At a time when we are struggling out of Covid but shackled by a fuel shortage, movement remains restricted and autumn is closing around us, photography is a challenge and one is happy with a record shot. It was a prematurely gloomy evening with steady rain when I snatched a couple of pictures at the grubby Portsmouth & Southsea. The dot matrix indicators made little sense but South Western Railway Class 450 emu 450031 was possibly going to form a service to Southampton. Its livery contrasts with the adopted SWR colours on a Class 440 unit at the high-level platform which I read off as 440038.

My favourite stock at the Mangapps Railway is the 2 x Class 302 DTSOs including E75250 unit no. 227. This is coupled to E75033 from unit no. 201 [qv].

The Mangapps Railway has two Class 302 DTSOs coupled and used as hauled stock. On the occasion of my visit they were a bit out of the way and, although I photographed E75250 fairly comfortably, I would have had to go a bit off piste to get a good shot of E75033 which still bears the unit number 302201. A bit of creativity was called for.

The most recent of numerous brandings and types of stock for Gatwick Express is represented by Class 387/2 Electrostar 387213 at Victoria. Given the current passenger situation at Gatwick, I thought a 12-car formation somewhat optimistic but I understand this currently runs to Brighton as a Southern service.

Both enduring and endearing, these units would once have been seen at London's Waterloo. The smart Merseyrail livery sees some units in grey with yellow relief, as here, and others in yellow with black relief.

As restrictions continue and we crawl on hands and knees towards various milestones, I have turned again to my archive. On previous occasions, I decided not to scan certain pictures because of quality, composition or lack of accompanying information. Over recent years, I have improved my editing techniques (you might not agree) and I can better recover some of my older images even if the composition is not always what I would accept today.

With the wires in place after the electrification from St Pancras, Class 315 emu 315807 was seen at Bedford early in the training programme. The Class 127 dmus which would be replaced could be seen at Bedford more than one year later. As I recall, the introduction into service of emus was delayed and the delay was exacerbated by ASLEF industrial action in 1982. A curiosity in this picture is the Tilbury blind displayed for this southbound run.

4-PEP prototype unit 4002, which gave rise to what would become Class 507 was, I think, already withdrawn when I saw it at East Wimbledon. Goodness only knows where I was standing.

Class 701 Aventra emus of South Western Railway continued to be stabled at Eastleigh during pre-service testing. On this occasion they were (l-r) 701008, 701006, 701002 and 701013.

Interestingly, 701002 displayed only the unit number (without the class number prefix) and that was on the left hand side. In my picture of 16 August 2020, which included 701006, all four units shown displayed that format.

I would not normally post a railway photograph as odd as this but, in this case, I thought the fractured composition had some interesting elements.

I don't know what the Class 700 Desiro City emu is like for performance and popularity but, aesthetically, it brings to the railways the sort of tedious blandness brought to London buses by the ostensible all red policy - from which the LT class appears to be exempt. However, there is a case for recording their service especially at a station where, at a much younger age, I saw the smoky characterful Class 127 Derby dmus replaced by first Class 317 and then a Class 319 emus.

Bedford station itself has changed substantially over the decades, first moving north from its Midland Road incarnation and then developing to accommodate a service level we did not even dream of in dmu days. This view, in fact, looks across platform 1A at which Class 230 continues to elude me. What is rather puzzling is the huge sooty or oily smudge spreading back along the base of the DMCO.

In the second half of 2020, Bombardier Transportation Aventra Class 701 emus for South Western Railway arrived at Eastleigh reportedly to be in position for test runs. A number of units were seen there. On Sunday 16 August, these were (l-r) 701006, 701007, 701005 and 701002.
