On F910 (Austurleið) at the turn-off to F902. The mountain in the background of the volcanic wasteland is Askja volcano.

F in a road name means Fjall (mountain), these tracks are only suitable for large 4x4 (no Dacia Dusters!), they are not surfaced, have river crossings and can be quite challenging. They are open only in summer (late June/ July - September/ early October depending on the weather).

Police and rangers are patrolling the highlands to help if someone runs into trouble and to make sure nobody does any offroad driving which is strictly forbidden.

Fines can be up to 1 million krona (not quite 7000 Euros) which many Icelanders think is much too low. A recent case of vandalism caused quite a stir:

Famous Icelandic painter Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval was born in Bakkagerði, a village in Borgarfjörður eystri. In 1914 when he was broke and starving he was asked to paint an altarpiece for the local church. He chose the sermon of the mount and set it in Bakkagerði with Christ standing on Àlfaborg (a rock that is said to be the home of elf queen Borghildur and her people), with the Dyrfjöll mountains as a backdrop and village people and hidden people (elves) listening. The bishop refused to consecrate the "heathen" painting;-)

Once a farm at the mouth of Seyðisfjörður, Skálanes is now run as a private Nature and Heritage Centre. There is a road along the fjord but the last 2,5 km to Skálanes are only passable for 4x4 (several river crossings) or via a footpath that has bridges. Just before the house the track crosses a breeding area of arctic terns- we got attacked quite aggressively;-)

Hverfjall is a tuff ring near Lake Mývatn that was created ca. 2500 years ago in a massive phreatomagmatic eruption (hot magma reacting with groundwater). It is part of the Krafla volcanic system.

On the left in the PiP and just SE of Hverfjall is another tuff ring, 6600 years old Lúdent.. The big mountain in the background is Búrfjell, a 959m high tuya (table mountain created by volcanic eruptions under a glacier)

Das Hochtemperaturgebiet Hverir (auch Hverarönd oder Námaskarð genannt) liegt am Fuß des Námafjall und ist Teil des Krafla- Vulkansystems. Dass die Gegend vuilkanisch sehr aktiv ist, hört und riecht man eindeutig;-)

Stuttgart's zoological-botanical garden has its own mineral springs.
Grey herons take advantage of this when it's not feeding time for sealions, pelicans or penguins where they hope to catch some fish, they always seem to know the time;-)
Herons have by now established about 40 nests in Wilhelma's lime avenue!

Skarðsheiði and neighbouring Hafnarfjall are the remains of an extinct, 4-5 million years old late pliocene central volcano south of Borgarfjörður.
The "sandwich" structure of tertiary basalts, andesite, numerous rhyolithic layers and gabbro intrusions makes it highly interesting for geologists.

SC 196- Flowers

In Stuttgart's zoological-botanical garden (Wilhelma) the paeonias were in full bloom just after Easter, 3 weeks earlier than last year. I managed to catch the last few in early May.
In the main photo a yellow hybrid, in the PiPs the pink ones which go back to the mid 19th century when Wilhelma was created as a private pleasure garden for King Wilhelm I.
