The present concourse shown here and the main platforms date from the 1912 expansion of the station, which included Bell's wrought iron canopies over the lengthy platforms 5 and 6. However the gates, gatepiers and railings at the West Entrance of the old market off Aylestone Road have been preserved in situ.

The official listing states:

Circa 1870. Nine pierced cast-iron gate piers square in section with pilaster shafts at angles, pointed arch heads. Between are gates and railings with spandrels of linked rings. Two piers flanking centre gateway are higher with cast-iron cattle and rams heads in tympanum of archedhead facing in four directions. At ends red brick piers with similar but larger stone arched heads with animal heads.

HFF to everyone. Have a great post-Christmas weekend.

The main reason for building the North Woolwich branch was to provide access to the town of Woolwich with it's military arsenal on the south side of the River Thames.

The railway ferry ran from North Woolwich pier seen here until 1908 when the Great Eastern Railway withdrew it in the face of competition from the adjacent municipal free ferry. The pier on the south bank was demolished but that on the north bank was retained and until WW2 was used by the LNER as a calling point for river steamers providing a service to Southend and Margate.

The free ferry still runs and the two vessels seen here are the Ben Woolacott and the Dame Vera Lynn both built by Remontowa shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, to replace the previous fleet in 2019. They have not been without problems!

HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend.

a) This was taken in the UK but hortensia, as they are also known, are flowering plants actually native to Asia and both North & South America so their spread is truly world-wide.

b) Hortensia, is a Latinised version of the French given name Hortense, honoring French astronomer and mathematician Nicole-Reine Hortense Lepaute.

I like the drama of these large flower heads and eye-catching green leaves but I also see them as a representation of life. How so? In this one bush is the whole life cycle if you like; birth is seen at the bottom right as a new flower begins to bloom, maturity is all around in the bright pink flowers and death beckons bottom left as the petals are already brown in anticipation of the autumn to come.

I also like how the colour of the flower is a direct indication of the pH of the soil. This pink plant is growing in alkaline conditions with a pH of 6.5 or higher while interestingly the next bush (off shot to the right) is blue indicating acidic soil with a pH or 5.5 or lower.

Best seen large IMO.
