Occasionally, an almost circular greenish formation can be found on the bark of deciduous trees in sparse forests. It is a type of foliose lichen, namely Punctelia subrudecata. The specimen in the photo has a diameter of about 6 cm. This lichen is used by ecologists to assess air quality.
A brief description of the structure of a lichen: The "body" of the lichen is formed by a specific fungus in which a specific type of algae has nested. Both organisms live in a symbiotic relationship: the fungus provides the algae with a habitat and supplies it with water and mineral salts, while the algae provides the fungus with nutrients, which it produces through photosynthesis. A successful tandem!

The "oak moss" that occasionally grows on oak bark in forests is not a moss, but a shrubby thallus lichen, namely Evernia prunasti. This lichen species is not found in heavily air-polluted areas and in air-dry locations. However, the species is not considered endangered in Germany. It is noteworthy that a basic ingredient for perfumes is extracted from this lichen. The photo was taken in an oak forest.
