Anne Elliott has posted:

Note: This is NOT my main photo of the three (i.e. the very last photo posted) I'm posting today! The Great Gray Owl is my main photo. Flickr is messing up yet AGAIN, showing my photos in a different order from what I post when some people look at them, which drives me nuts! Often, my second and third photos are much poorer quality (sometimes downright awful, lol), so that is what people see if they have Flickr set to show only one photo from each Contact, instead of what is usually the best of my 'daily three'. They are always displayed in the right order on my photostream.

Even though these majestic Elk are raised at the Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch, along with Buffalo/Bison, it's amazing to see them on the rolling hills SW of Calgary. Of course, one always prefers photos of animals in the wild, but I rarely get to see wild Elk and, when I do, they tend to be way off in the distance.

Throughout history, elk have been hunted for their quality lean meat. More information on the Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch can be found at the link below:

www.crmr.com/ranch/

The light was so harsh when I arrived at a wetland in SW Calgary rather late in the afternoon of 5 June 2015. There didn't seem to be a lot of birds in sight and just the usual ones, so I didn't stay long. No sign of any young ones yet with the Red-necked Grebe, lying on her distant nest.

From the wetland, I drove a few of the backroads SW of the city, seeing familiar birds that I often photograph, but always happy for the opportunity to shoot again. One hillside had numerous white-spotted baby Elk - raised on a ranch, but still so cute to see, despite not being wild. Three Mourning Doves were perched on a high wire in their usual spot. A herd of gorgeous Long-horn cattle and their cute youngsters were in a field that I passed, but again, the afternoon sun was just too harsh for photos. Stopped to photograph a pair of Mountain Bluebirds - there were flashes of blue along many of the backroads. A Snipe standing on a fence post in a different place completed my afternoon.

What you don't see is the pile of people outside of their cars with their children within 20 meters of the animal. I took this from the drivers seat in my car. He graciously lifted his head amidst this din and gave me this pose.

It was either the rack or the feet in this photo because the rack was so big. Actually I slightly cropped it to remove the pavement from the road.

The shot of the people would have been interesting but too painful to share. I took this one just before a small car pulled up and stopped right next to the animal. Not only was it incredibly dangerous for the animal but also for the person in the car next to those antlers. I am fairly certain that they had the window down as well.

Sight and Sound: Pictures and Music. Here are two videos for you.
1. An elk bugling during rutting season.
What else could go with this fine fellow looking for a girl and battling to get her? Why of course it would be the "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B."
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qafnJ6mRbgk

What else could go with this fine fellow looking for a girl and battling to get her? Why of course it would be the "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B."

My friends, Cathy and Terry, and I, had left Calgary early morning on Wednesday (14 May 2014) and I think it was around 12:15 a.m. midnight (Thursday, 15 May 2014), that they dropped me off at home after two long, wonderful days in the Rocky Mountains, west of the city. Wednesday night was spent in a spotless motel, in a place that had so many Mountain Sheep roaming the streets, lol! Though we were hoping to see at least one Bear, I knew I would be happy as can be to see absolutely anything beautiful : )

At one point, we drove past a site that had quite a few wooden cabins. A large, Elk-shaped object caught my eye in the far distance, among the cabins. At first, I wondered if the owners of the site had added a sculpture for interest. However, when we went to check, this is what we found : ) This huge Elk bull was wandering in between the cabins, happily feeding. Unfortunate, really, when wildlife becomes this accustomed to humans, but it did give us a chance to see one of these impressive wild animals at closer quarters. The whole time we watched, I was very aware of the huge size of this wild animal and never forgot for a moment that wildlife can be unpredictable!

The only thing that was not good on this trip was that I was in absolute agony - the rotator cuffs in both shoulders were inflamed and the excruciating pain spread down to my lower back, making it difficult to even walk. Three months later, my shoulders are not as bad as they were, but it's taking a long, long time. So many things require the use of ones shoulders, so it's impossible to rest them for a long period. It was certainly bad timing for this trip, ha!
However, over the two days, we had 7 bear sightings, with three definitely different Black Bears (no Grizzlies), and possibly four. The rest of the sightings were of Bears we had already seen.

Taken on 24 June 2013. I did think of "removing" their ear tags, but I was just too tired to do it. Of course, one always prefers photos of animals in the wild, but I rarely get to see wild Elk and, when I do, they are way off in the distance. This closer shot shows what beautiful animals they are.
Throughout history, elk have been hunted for their quality lean meat. More information on the Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch can be found at the link below:
Yesterday, I finally copied all the photos from the computer I'm using on to a new external hard drive. This was supposed to be done as part of a full transfer by the people at the computer store, but it wasn't. Can't face carrying the two computers back to the store and back home, and being without a computer for a few days again, so I'm doing it myself. Took just over 7 hours to transfer yesterday - I kept off the computer while this was happening, as I didn't want to risk doing something wrong or making it take even longer to do. Sometime soon, I will have to hook up my "new" computer and transfer all my photos to that, and then comes the fun of trying to figure out Windows 7, ha.
