Das Fleth: war früher als Binnenhafen konzipiert. Es verband die Stadt mit den Wasser-läufen der umliegenden Marsch und der Elbe. Außer dem Steindamm, der von Glückstadt nach Krempe führte, gab es keine befestigten Verkehrswege, so dass das Fleth als Handels- und Umschlagplatz aber auch für die Wasserversorgung der Bevölkerung von großer Bedeutung war. Wohlhabende Bürger und Gewerbetreibende ließen sich an beiden Seiten nieder. Die Flethanlage wurde 1956 zugeschüttet und 1987 im Rahmen der Stadtsanierung wieder hergestellt.
