Mit dem Brückenmännchen hatte die Steinerne Brücke schon sehr früh ein weithin bekanntes Wahrzeichen, dessen Beliebtheit sich bis heute erhalten hat.<br /> Mit einer Bauzeit von 1135 bis spätestens 1146 gilt die komplett aus Stein erbaute Steinerne Brücke als ein Meisterwerk mittelalterlicher Baukunst und als die älteste erhaltene Brücke in Deutschland. Nach ihrer Erbauung gewann die Steinerne Brücke als einzige Donaubrücke zwischen Ulm und Wien große Bedeutung als günstige Verbindung von Fernhandelswegen aus dem Süden mit Absatzgebieten im Norden. Regensburg als Umschlagsplatz profitierte nicht nur von den Zolleinnahmen des Fernhandels, auch der Handel mit dem nahen nördlichen Umland wurde stark erleichtert.
