The Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company was formed in 1846 and leased by the London and North Western Railway from 1847. The railway company finally bought it in 1922. The Trent and Mersey Canal was actually owned by a rival  company - the North Staffordshire Railway.&lt;/div&gt;</description>
