Another footplate shot from BR Blue-liveried Great Western Railway King 4-6-0 6023 King Edward II. We are stationary at Rothley Up platform signal waiting for the Class 37-hauled train to clear the section from Leicester North before proceeding.

On the first day of the 2025 Winter Gala I had a morning turn on visiting engine GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850. I was checking the water level in the tender when this view presented itself.

The original GWR 2-8-0s introduced in 1908 had a typically Edwardian small cab roof but even this 1940s update is hardly less Spartan especially when running backwards in the rain!

Fences are maybe not the main interest here but HFF to everyone. Enjoy the weekend ahead.

Great Western standardisation. It could be one of several classes because the cab layouts are very similar. In fact it's GWR Manor 4-6-0 7828 Odney Manor.

Visiting for the Autumn Gala the engine worked again over the weekend and will finally leave the GCR this week. I never got a firing turn on it but did manage a couple of short cab rides. This one was from the shed to the Up Through which I drove.

The lack of crew is explained by the fact we were still on shed! The signal box can be seen through the driver's window.

It's the second day of the GCR Autumn Gala and I'm rostered on Standard 2 78019. We are prepping the engine on road 3 and looking back toward the shed this is the fine sight that met us at 06.06.

Visiting Manor 4-6-0 7828 Odney Manor and resident BR Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 are already brewing up. Other locos in steam on this day are 8F 48305, Std 2 78018 & Modified Hall 6990 Witherslack Hall.

Great thumbnail, not so sure about the full size... Best to view it as an abstract painting perhaps.

GWR Manor Class 4-6-0 7819 Hinton Manor blasting away from Aberystwyth with the Cambrian Limited railtour - the narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol line is on the left. Aberystwyth's former engine shed was used by the VofR engines at this time although the tank and coaling stage were out of use.

Great Western Railway pannier tank 0-6-0PT 7714 with Chris at the controls sets off from Rothley on the 16.45 ex-Loughborough. I'm not sure what the car on the right is but it's a real classic.

GCR Winter Steam Gala 2019.

During our lay over in the Down Carriage Sidings I was left alone for a while on the footplate of our visitor from the Severn Valley Railway, Great Western Railway Manor 4-6-0 7802 Bradley Manor.

So what do you do after you've made sure the fire and water are in good shape and you've pulled some coal forward? Take a photo from the tender of course!

he morning sun catches GWR pannier tank 0-6-0PT 7714 and Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 43106 as they back off Bridgnorth shed shrouded by steam. They would then double-head the 08.00 local train to Kidderminster, the first train of the day.

You can't beat a steam railway on a cold, misty winter's evening for atmosphere and Rothley station is full of it.

With the gas lights flickering, the signal lamps glowing and GWR 2-8-0T 4247 arriving and departing the ambiance is perfect.

(I'm not sure why the thumbnail is out of focus because the video itself is fine!!)

Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3802 arrived in platform 1 before our train and here Rob & Lee have got the shunt signal to cross over to shed road 1 and take water before running round their train.

GWR Modified Hall 4-6-0 6990 Witherslack Hall topping and tailing with Black 5 45305 on a two coach train. This got 6990 to Rothley to head a later working leaving 45305 to return to Loughborough with the short local train. Some of that steam was drifting from our own engine in the siding.

After my leisurely ride on Great Western Modified Hall 4-6-0 6990 Witherslack Hall Les and me relieved Pete & Aran for the last trip of the day. More exertion on my part this time but no photos!

We arrived back on shed to find both pits occupied so were instructed to stable the Hall in road 3. I ran the irons through the fire and topped up the boiler and we were done. She still had 120psi on the boiler but the fire was blackening and there's not a whiff of steam around.
