This marble chimney-piece by Alfred Stevens is from the dining room of Dorchester House, Park Lane, where it was installed in an unfinished state around 1869. The figure parts were polished by James Gamble after Stevens’ death (he died in 1875).

The frieze with its inscription is taken from the biblical book of Ecclesiastes 2:24 and reads in full: "There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour."
