The Menace in Montrose - 16 July 2021

On a first visit to Montrose, we noticed that many of the cars were very messy and that it was evident that they had not been left parked for a long time. The cause became obvious when we noted the many very noisy and aggressive gulls who seemed to have created a problem on a greater scale than in some other places. The chimney in this picture reflects that problem.

Apparently ignoring the fish in the waters beneath them, a number of gulls noisily patrolled the balcony of Ocean Terminal, Leith in the hope of less labour intensive pickings from the café customers.

Gulls are a part of everyday life in Britain, often taken for granted and increasingly regarded as a nuisance, even dangerous, in places where they feed aggressively. As part of our natural beauty however they should not be overlooked.

In a pretty urban setting, albeit the appropriately named Peacehaven, this immature Herring Gull was in contemplative mood until I approached a little too closely for its liking.

For all their growing reputation for aggression, especially in urban environments, I rather like gulls. It was not a great surprise to see one (of very many) in seaside Looe but the behaviour of this adult Herring Gull was quite astonishing. It was in Fore Street but not entirely hemmed in, which gulls loathe, because there was a car park behind it and to one side. It approached a chip shop and was staring at the closed side door much as a cat might. It was looking up towards the glazed section clearly in expectation and, in a short while, that expectation was fulfilled as someone cracked the door and threw out something interesting. The gull remained in the hope of more and, was, seemingly, much less perturbed by the proximity of pedestrians than similar birds. Throughout its visit it adopted the peculiar one foot raised posture shown in my three pictures. I ruled out an ingrowing toenail so I thought perhaps it was preparation for a hasty departure.

On a misty morning in June, Folkestone Harbour looked particularly grim although it is undergoing a slow and much needed regeneration. Just outside the Folkestone Harbour Arm development stood a scary looking gull model on a trailer. This profile looks relatively benign compared to the previous pictures.
