Lüneburg war früher ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt für den Warentransport, denn die Ilmenau war schiffbar bis in die Elbe. Vom Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts transportierten Schiffe (Salzewer) das kostbare Salz aus den Lüneburger Salinen nach Lübeck und Hamburg. Zur Blütezeit der Saline wurden so jährlich mehr als 10.000 Tonnen Salz allein nach Lübeck geschifft. Der Wasserweg war weitaus ungefährlicher und billiger als die Landroute, die heute als „Alte Salzstraße“ bekannt ist.

Dort kam es im Dezember 2013 zu einem Großfeuer, das historische Gebäude am Stintmarkt brannte dabei vollkommen aus. Die Ursache war eine Explosion im Restaurant La Trattoria - vermutlich Brandstiftung. Die Täter wurden bis heute nicht ermittelt. Der Schaden belief sich auf ca. eine Million Euro. Das stark beschädigte Baudenkmal musste teils abgetragen werden, wurde aber in der Folge weitgehend originalgetreu wieder aufgebaut.

Eine typische Fassade in der New Town, einem zentralen Stadtteil von Edinburgh. Sie wurde zwischen 1767 und etwa 1850 in mehreren Etappen erbaut. Ein Großteil ihrer ursprünglichen neoklassizistischen und georgianischen Architektur ist erhalten geblieben.

Old und New Town Edinburgh's wurden 1995 in die UNESCO Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen.

Die meisten älteren Gebäude Edinburghs bestehen aus lokalem Sandstein , der an 20 Standorten innerhalb der Stadt abgebaut wurde. Es handelt sich dabei meist um einen hellen oder grauen Quarzsandstein.
