Pamplona - Café Iruña

In 74 BC, the Roman city was founded by Pompejus on the site of a local settlement. The city served to secure the Pyrenees crossing from Roncesvalles.

Pamplona was destroyed several times in the course of its history:

466 by the Visigoths, 542 by the Franks, 778 by Charlemagne, 924 by Abd ar-Rahman III and in 1521 during the Franco-Spanish War by troops of Francis I.

Its location on the Way of St. James from France gave the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre a boom in the 11th century. With the division of Navarre, the city ultimately came to Spain.

After the conquest of the country and its incorporation into Castile in 1512-1515, Pamplona became one of the outposts of the Spanish crown on the French border. Its mission for 300 years was to secure the border against a possible invasion from France. Fortifications and walls were a vital system of defense, but at the same time prevented the city from expanding.

Café Iruña was the first place in the city to have electric light and has been the meeting place in the center of Pamplona since it opened in 1888.

The café was one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite places. In the 1920s it served as a base from which visitors from overseas would set out. And so this café plays a secret role in Hemingway's first novel "The Sun Also Rises".

Das Gebäude wurde 1851 im amerikanischen Kolonialstil aus Muschelkalk erbaut und hat eine umlaufende Veranda.
Es war für rund zehn Jahre das Zuhause des US-Literaturnobelpreisträgers Ernest Hemingway und seiner zweiten Frau Pauline Marie Pfeiffer.
Hemingway kam 1928 auf Empfehlung seines Kollegen John Dos Passos erstmals nach Key West. 1931 schenkte ihm Paulines Onkel Gus das Gebäude. Es gibt einen großen Park mit rund 40 Katzen und das Haus ist teilweise original möbliert. Hemingway schrieb hier "Die grünen Hügel Afrikas" und "Wem die Stunde schlägt" und er ging gerne in Key West zum Hochseefischen.
1968 (sieben Jahre nach Hemingways Tod) wurde da Haus zum National Historic Landmark erklärt und ist jetzt ein Privatmuseum.

Ronda was known to the Romans by the name of Arunda. At the end of the Roman Empire it was taken by the Suebi and later part of the Visigoth realm. In 713 it fell to the Berbers, who built a castle on the Roman foundations. The troops of the Marquis of Cádiz conquered Ronda after a siege in 1485.

The Spanish decreed that all Muslims must either convert to Christianity or leave Spain without their belongings. Muslims who converted were called Moriscos, they had to wear upon their hats a blue crescent. In 1566 Philip II decreed the use of the Arabic language illegal, required that doors open on Fridays to verify that no Muslim Friday prayers were conducted. This led to a rebellion. The Muslim soldiers defeated the Spanish army sent to suppress them. The massacre prompted Phillip II to order the expulsion of all Moriscos in Ronda.

Ronda´s Moorish old town, La Ciudad, is located on a steeply sloping rock plateau. The old town is separated from the younger part, El Mercadillo, by the "Tajo de Ronda" a narrow gorge almost 100 meters deep, formed by the Guadalevín River.

The "Plaza de Toros" in Ronda is the oldest bullfight ring in Spain, Construction of the bullring started in 1779 and finished in 1785. It has a capacity of 6000. Ernest Hemingway, who spent some summers in Ronda, for sure visited this bullring very often, before he wrote "Death in the Afternoon".
