These would have been used to defend airfields or other RAF facilities.

First RAF fighter / interceptor to do 200mph in level flight. Introduced in 1931 and served until 1949. Very agile and well-known for precision aerobatics pre WW2.

Design based on the Lancaster heavy bomber. Originally operated by the Royal Air Force from 1946, it was used on the Berlin Airlift. Sold to Dan-Air in 1954 which flew it until 1964. After retirement it was on display at Lasham Airfield until it was transferred to the Duxford Aviation Society, dismantled before it came to Duxford in 1986 for a 20-year restoration programme, currently in Dan-Air livery.

Bought by Imperial War Museum in January 1978 and returned to a wartime configuration. Wore livery of 42-31983 "Mary Alice" with 401st Bombardment Group. Conservation project in 2012 supported by 96th Bombardment Group, repainted as generic 96th BG with tail number 42-38133 ...

A few minutes previously, these two had "beaten up" the runway - a fast, low-level pass - before going onto their final circuit and landing. Sounded wonderful ...

There is one of the two "tandem" Spitfires just touching down after an air-experience flight.

Just a few minutes prior both "Spits" had beaten up the runway - a low-level & high speed pass - before going onto their final circuit before landing. Wonderful sound.
