In Island leben 300000 Menschen auf einer Fläche von 103 000 qkm (entsprechend fast der Hälfte der alten Bundesrepublik). In dieser fast unendlichen Weite in Islands Süden findet man dieses Häuschen, priviligiert oder illegal gebaut. Der grüne Südwesten Islands ist durch den vorbeifließenden Golfstrom klimatisch begünstigt, so dass Land- und Viehwirtschaft (Schafe, Pferde) möglich sind.
In der Nähe findet man den weltbekannten Seljalandsfoss, einen Wasserfall, der auf der Rückseite begehbar ist (s. PiP 1). Aber Vorsicht. Ausrutsch- und Sturzgefahr!
Und nebenan, etwa 60 km östlich von dieser grün-idyllischen Stelle, wo das Hauptfoto entstand, durchfährt man die Eldhraun, das weltgrößte Lavafeld mit 565 qkm (!), siehe PiP 2. Dieses Lavafeld entstand beim Ausbruch der benachbarten Laki-Vulkane 1783/84, eine der größten Vulkaneruptionen der Weltgeschichte und führte in der Folgezeit zu erheblichen klimatischen Veränderungen und Hungersnöten vor allem in der nördlichen Hemisphäre.

Nearby you will find the world-famous Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall that can be walked on at the back (see PiP 1). But beware. Danger of slipping and falling!
And next door, about 60 km east of this green-idyllic spot where the main photo was taken, you pass through the Eldhraun, the world's largest lava field with 565 sq km (!), see PiP 2. This lava field was formed during the eruption of the neighbouring Laki volcanoes in 1783/84, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in world history, and subsequently led to considerable climatic changes and famine, especially in the northern hemisphere.

Der isländische Wasserfall Seljalandsfoss stürzt 66 m mit ohrenbetäubendem Lärm in die Tiefe und erzeugt dabei eine riesige Wolke von Wassernebel. Die Aufnahme wurde deshalb mit meinem wasserdichen Smartphone durchgeführt. Wie ich schon früher erwähnt habe, kann man hinter dem Wasserfall vorbei wandern (wenn man es sich getraut). Der Seljalandsfoss ist eine der ganz großen Attraktionen in Island.

The Icelandic waterfall Seljalandsfoss plunges 66 m into the depths with deafening noise, creating a huge cloud of water mist. Therefore the picture was taken with my smartphone. As I mentioned before, you can walk behind the waterfall (if you dare). The Seljalandsfoss is one of the really great attractions in Iceland.

Im Bild der größte europäische Gletscher Vatnajökull (Island) mit dem Gletschersee Jökulsárlón. Die Gletscherzungen ziehen sich immer mehr und schneller zurück und wenn das Abschmelzen mit dem bisherigen Tempo weitergeht, wird Island in ca. 200 Jahren eisfrei und damit grün sein, mit unabsehbaren Folgen für die Insel selbst und das Weltklima. Die Gletscherabbruchkante des Vatnajökull im Bild ist ca. 30 m hoch. Deshalb müssen Schiffe einen sehr großen Sicherheitsabstand einhalten, um nicht zu kentern, wenn Teile der Gletscherwand abbrechen und Flutwellen von bis drei Metern Höhe erzeugen. Das youtube-Video zeigt ein solches Ereignis am Jökulsárlón!
Die Vegetation im Vordergrund besteht aus Moosen und Flechten.

The glacier tongues are retreating more and more and faster and if the melting continues at the present rate, Iceland will be ice-free and thus green in about 200 years, with unforeseeable consequences for the island itself and the world climate. The glacier break-off edge in the picture is about 30 m high. Therefore, ships must keep a very large safety distance to avoid capsizing if parts of the glacier wall break off and create tidal waves of up to three metres in height. The youtube-Video shows such an event at Jökulsárlón!
The vegetation in the foreground consists of mosses and lichens.

Blick zur Kathedrale von Skálholt. Dahinter der mächtige 1491 m hohe Hekla, einer der aktivsten Vulkane Islands, dessen letzte Eruption nur neun Jahre zurückliegt. Skálholt war seit dem Mittelalter der wichtigste Bischofssitz Islands. 1550 wurden hier der letzte katholische Bischof Islands, Jón Arason, und seine Söhne, von Anhängern der Reformation hingerichtet.

Bei einer Reise in Island stößt man überall auf die relativ kleinen Islandpferde, die das ganze Jahr halbwild im Feien in Herden leben. Ihr Charakter wird immer wieder gelobt – insbesondere ihr munteres, aber sanftes Temperament. Da diese Tiere keine natürlichen Feinde in ihrer Umgebung haben, sind sie kaum schreckhaft und entsprechend kontaktfreudig und freundlich – und sie sehen einfach knuddelig aus! Und abends finden sich immer wieder Paare, die sich sympathisch sind, gleichgeschlechtig oder ungleichgeschlechtlich, und putzen sich gegenseitig intensiv die Mähne und das Fell ("scratchen"), also Liebe auf Pferdeart. Sehr schön dem zuzusehen!

During a journey in Iceland, one comes across the relatively small Icelandic horses everywhere that live half wild in herds all year round. Their character is praised again and again - especially their lively but gentle temperament. Since these animals have no natural enemies in their environment, they are hardly jumpy and accordingly sociable and friendly - and they simply look cuddly! And in the evenings there are always couples who are sympathetic to each other, same sex or unequal sex, and clean each other intensively the mane and the coat ("scratching"), so love on horse kind. Very nice to watch!

Dieser Wasserfall gehört mit Þingvellir und den benachbarten Geysiren zum sogenannten Gullni hringurinn (Golden Circle, dt. wörtlich: „Goldener Ring“ oder „Goldene Rundfahrt“) der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Islands. Die Aufnahme entstand auf der Anhöhe über dem Wasserfall, das Getöse und die Wassernebel waren noch hier oben wahrzunehmen. Die Aufnahme entstand am Morgen kurz vor 9.00 Uhr Ortszeit, der Touristenstrom wird bald einsetzen.

This waterfall belongs with Þingvellir and the neighbouring geysers to the so-called Gullni hringurinn (Golden Circle) of the most famous sights of Iceland. The picture was taken on the hill above the waterfall, the noise and the water mist could still be noticed up here. The picture was taken in the morning shortly before 9.00 a.m. local time, the stream of tourists will start soon.

In Ásólfsskáli befindet sich dieses hübsche Kirchlein (Ásólfsskálakirkja ) in einer eindrucksvollen Graslandschaft. Wenige Gebirgszüge weiter ist schon der Gletscher Eyafjallajökull, den man von der Straße 246 deutlich sehen kann (s. PiP). In der Nähe befindet sich das empfehlenswerte Hotel Anna. Die Aufnahme entstand am Abend.

In Ásólfsskáli this pretty little church (Ásólfsskálakirkja ) is situated in an impressive grassy landscape. A few mountain ranges further is the glacier Eyafjallajökull, which can be clearly seen from road 246 (see PiP). The photo was taken in the evening.

Der Vulkan Eldfell auf den Westmänner Inseln brach 1973 aus und stieß eine enorme Menge an Lava und Asche aus, welche die Stadt Heimaey, den Hafen und die ganze Insel bedrohte, so dass die Insel evakuiert werden musste. Im Bild rötlichbraune Vulkanasche und erstarrte Lava, im Hintergrund Island mit Gletschern.

Über staubige Vulkanaschefelder und in großer Hitze erfolgte der Abstieg nach Heimaey. Im Hintergrund Island mit Gletschern.
The descent to Heimaey took place over dusty volcanic ash fields and in great heat. In the background Iceland with glaciers.

Am Rand der Vulkanasche und Lavafelder hat sich schon wieder blühende natürliche Vegetation gebildet. Die Natur erobert sich neuen Lebensraum.
At the edge of the volcanic ashes and lava fields flowering natural vegetation has grown again. Nature is conquering new habitats.

Wie Zwerge sind wir Menschen in dieser gigantischen Eiswelt! We humans are like dwarves in this gigantic ice world!

Im Bildhintergrund etwas links ist gerade eine Wandergruppe dabei den Gletscher Falljökull (Teil des Vatnajökull National Parks) zu besteigen. In den gigantischen Eismassen fällt sie kaum auf. Der Gletscher ist keine ebene Fläche, sondern ist geformt wie eine hochalpine Welt. Wegen der Gefahren sollte man Gletscher nie ohne Führung und entsprechende Ausrüstung betreten.

In the background on the left there is a group of hikers climbing the glacier Falljökull. It is hardly noticeable in the gigantic ice masses. The glacier is not a flat surface, but is shaped like a high alpine world. Because of the dangers, one should never enter the glacier without a guide and appropriate equipment.

Die Wandergruppe nähert sich dem Gletscher. Jeder Teilnehmer hat seine
ausgeliehenen Utensilien (Eispickel und die Eiskrampen für die Wanderschuhe) dabei. Das schwarze "Gebirge" im Vordergrund ist Gletschereis, das von Vulkanasche schwarz gefärbt ist.

Der Falljökull-Gletscher ist ein Teil des Vatnajökull-Gletschers. Der Vatnajökull ist der größte Gletscher Islands und zudem außerhalb des Polargebiets auch der größte Europas. Anfang Juni diesen Jahres erlebten meine Frau und ich zum ersten Mal in Island das Phänomen, dass es in der Nähe des Polarkreises zu dieser Zeit in der Nacht nicht richtig dunkel wird, sondern die ganze Nacht über die Landschaft in eine leichte Dämmerung getaucht ist. Die Lichtstärke ist noch so groß, dass man ohne große Mühe lesen kann.
Das Bild wurde kurz vor Mitternacht MEZ ganz in der Nähe unseres Hotels aufgenommen. Man sieht die Landschaft im Vordergrund in leichter Dämmerung, während der mächtige Vatna-Gletscher (der größte Gletscher Europas und der zweitgrößte der Welt) noch in grellem Sonnenlicht leuchtet. Das war eines der schönsten Erlebnisse auf unserer Island-Reise.

At the beginning of June this year, my wife and I experienced for the first time in Iceland the phenomenon that it is not really getting dark at night near the Arctic Circle at this time of year, but that the whole night over the landscape is immersed in a slight twilight. The light intensity is still so great that one can read without much effort.
The picture was taken shortly before midnight CET near our hotel. One sees the landscape in the foreground immersed in a mild twilight light, while the mighty Vatna Glacier (the largest glacier in Europe and the second largest in the world) still glows in bright sunlight. This was one of the most beautiful experiences on our Iceland trip.

Diese auffällige Skulptur befindet sich in Reykjavik an der nördlichen Küstenstraße Sæbraut. Aus Edelstahl bestehend, ähnelt sie einem Wikingerschiff und gehört zu den meist fotografierten Kunstwerken in Reykjavík. Unterschiedliche Licht- und Wetterverhältnisse sorgen für Abwechslung. Bei Sonnenauf- und Sonnenuntergang scheint das Metall zu glühen. Meine Islandreise in Bildern ist nun beendet. Ich hoffe, dass sich viele an den Fotos erfreut haben und Gefallen an diesem grandiosen Land gefunden haben.

So begann unsere Reise durch Südisland Anfang Juni diesen Jahres: Nämlich mit einem Blick über den See Þingvallavatn bei eisigem NO-Wind. Die Farbe des Sees entstand nicht mittels Photoshop!
Der See ist für die Isländer von großer historischer Bedeutung, denn an seinem Nordufer tagte nämlich schon ab 930 bis zum Jahr 1800 bei Þingvellir die gesetzgebende Versammlung Alþing, eines der ältesten Parlamente Europas.

So our journey through South Iceland began at the beginning of June this year: With a view over the lake Þingvallavatn with icy NO-wind. The colour of the lake was not created with Photoshop!
The lake is of great historical importance for the Icelanders, because the legislative assembly Alþing, one of the oldest parliaments in Europe, met at Þingvellir on its northern shore from 930 to 1800.

Dahinter befindet sich schon die Altstadt mit vielen relativ kleinen Häusern, kleinen Geschäften, Restaurants, gepflegten Parkanlagen und Museen, so dass eher der Eindruck einer sympathischen Kleinstadt entsteht. Von den ungefähr 350000 Isländern leben rund 120000 in Reykjavik. Island ist das am dünnsten besiedelte Land Europas.
