At Washoe Lake. We lost her this last fall. She'd had an attack of old-dog vestibular syndrome December a year ago, and recovered some last spring, but was never back to her old self; and then she started sinking fast in late summer last year. Not only was she pretty, she had a sweet personality--not a mean bone in her body. They estimated she was about 3 when we rescued her in April 2008. The insets are some other photos from her glory years.

On the sort-of flooded Black Rock Playa (i.e., dry lake bed), Black Rock Desert, Nevada. This is more-or-less the area where the Burning Man counterculture festival is held around Labor Day (1st Monday in September, for those who may not know). Due to the very wet winter, the playa has been flooded to make an extremely shallow lake ("30 miles long and 3 inches deep," in the traditional joke), and it will be interesting to see if it dries out enough to hold the festival by September. The mountain across the playa on the left is Trego Mtn, a local landmark.

(L to R): Cole, Jill, & Jack on a surviving patch of snow, off the old Jeep trail to Leavitt Lake Pass in the Sierra Nevada, California. Elevation here is about 10,250 ft (3124 m). The well defined path is a use path to the snowfield--the snowfield is persistent enough it shows up on the USGS 7.5' topo! (Pickel Meadow.)

Cooling off in the Susan River outside Susanville, California, off the Bizz Johnson trail, which follows an old railroad grade. Susanville and the Susan River were named for Susan Roop, daughter of Isaac Roop, first territorial governor of Nevada. At that time, before any formal survey, it was thought that Susanville lay in Nevada.
