Passing through and old arch, probably from when the trail was constructed, I'm guessing from John Muir Trail history, close to 100 years ago. The mature tree growing right through the old sign is symbolic of the status of "unmaintained".

You often catch a glimpse of it below before taking any wrong descent over some incorrect fold. I can't imagine navigating it uphill.

This old unmaintained trail is so intertwined with alluvial fan like rock slides and bursting brush that you constantly lose the trail.

The picture doesn't show it obviously, but the clear view of the sunrise over the Inyo Mountains from up at 10,000 ft was really stunning. I had a few handfuls of trail mix left to get me down, which was fine as I had lost all appetite.

I managed to reach one of the few flat pads and creek access well before the light faded and knew it was best to bed down rather than keep going. In a way, the confounding forest and the false pass may have saved me from trying to descend all the way before dark. That would have been a bad move because the second half of the descent was hellish and I needed all my morning wits and energy to do it. My last Slim Jim amounted to dinner.

The entire descent is over 6,000 ft, and it's not going to be like trotting down the Whitney Portal. I knew my fantasy of getting out on day five was not going to happen.

Down some really ragged switchbacks. There were some slides and interrupted bits, but it was clear enough to follow and every step was taken with great care to avoid any injury.
