Auf der Landesgartenschau 2026 in Ellwangen war dieser Graffiti-Künstler gerade dabei einen Stieglitz im Großformat zu porträtieren. Keine schlechte Arbeit, finde ich.

At the 2026 State Garden Show in Ellwangen (Germany), this graffiti artist was in the process of painting a large-scale portrait of a goldfinch. Not a bad bit of work, I think.

Beim Verlassen des Münsters St. Georg in Dinkelsbühl hat man einen wunderschönen Durchblick durch das spätgotische Portal auf die farbenprächtigen Häuser des umliegenden Marktplatzes. In der Kirche selbst finden regelmäßig kostenfreie Orgelkonzerte statt.

Das Christoph-von-Schmid-Denkmal auf dem Marktplatz vor der St.-Georgs-Kirche in Dinkelsbühl ehrt den hier geborenen Priester und berühmten Jugendbuchautor. Die am 12. Oktober 1859 enthüllte Bronzestatue von Max von Widnmann trägt die Inschrift „Dem Erzähler der Jugend“. Christoph von Schmid (1768–1854) war ein katholischer Priester, Schulrat und Verfasser zahlreicher Jugendschriften. Er schuf unter anderem den Text des weltbekannten Weihnachtsliedes „Ihr Kinderlein kommet“.

Ein Blick in den Innenstadtbereich von Dinkelsbühl (Deutschland). Dinkelsbühl war im Heiligen Römischen Reich eine Reichsstadt, die direkt dem Kaiser unterstand und politisch weitgehend autonom war. Dinkelsbühl gehört zu den besonders gut erhaltenen historischen Städten in Süddeutschland. Dinkelsbühl blieb im Zweiten Weltkrieg weitgehend von schweren Zerstörungen verschont, da die Stadt kurz vor Kriegsende im April 1945 kampflos übergeben wurde. Das historische Stadtbild blieb dadurch im Wesentlichen erhalten.

Auf der Landesgartenausstellung 2026 in Ellwangen wurde im Kreuzgang der Ellwanger Basilika St. Vitus dieses originelle Blumengesteck mit frischen Pflanzen gezeigt, das mich sehr beeindruckt hat. Die wechselnden Blumenschauen des Fachverbands Deutscher Floristen in St. Vitus waren ein Highlight der Landesgartenschau. Zum Foto: Ich habe die Umgebung des Gestecks entfernt, um die Wirkung zu verbessern.

At the 2026 State Garden Show in Ellwangen, this original flower arrangement made with fresh plants was displayed in the cloister of St Vitus Basilica in Ellwangen, and it made a great impression on me. The changing floral displays organised by the Professional Association of German Florists at St Vitus were a highlight of the State Garden Show. About the photo: I have cropped out the background around the arrangement to enhance the effect.

Bei mir im Garten gefunden: Ein prächtiges Weibchen vom Hauhechel-Bläuling (Polyommatus icarus), einer bei uns häufigen Bläulingsart, die von April bis Oktober fliegt und pro Jahr bis zu 3 Generationen ausbildet. Die Männchen sind auf der Unterseite im Grundton leicht grau gefärbt. Der Schmetterling im Bild saugt an einer Blüte der Färberkamille (Cota tinctoria), die im Moment blüht.

Found in my garden: a magnificent female Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus), a butterfly species that is widespread here, flying from April to October and producing up to three generations per year. The males show a slightly greyish ground tone on the underside. The butterfly in the photo is feeding on a blossom of Golden Marguerite (Cota tinctoria), which is currently in bloom.

In extremer Mittagshitze fand ich diesen Geißklee-Bläuling (Plebejus argus), wahrscheinlich ein Männchen. In Deutschland gilt diese hübsche Falterart gemäß der Roten Liste als gefährdet.

In the intense midday heat, I found this silver-studded blue (Plebejus argus), probably a male. In Germany, this pretty butterfly species is classified as ‘endangered’ on the Red List.

Bei einer Wanderung lief mir diese auffällig grün gefärbte Raupe des Kleinen Nachtpfauenauges (Saturnia pavonia) über den Weg. Sie wurde gerade von einer Ameise inspiziert, ob sie als Futter verwendet werden könnte. Aus der grünen Raupe entsteht nach der Verpuppung ein wunderschöner Nachtfalter (siehe Wikipedia).

Whilst out walking, I came across this strikingly green caterpillar of the Small Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia). It was being inspected by an ant, which was checking whether it might be suitable as food. After pupation, the green caterpillar emerges as a beautiful moth (see Wikipedia).

Dieser kleine Bläuling, nämlich der Pflaumen Zipfelfalter (Satyrium pruni) tauchte kürzlich in meinem Garten auf, um an Blüten des Gewöhnliche Pfeifenstrauchs (Philadelphus coronarius) zu naschen. Die Raupen des Pflaumen-Zipfelfaltersfressen nach dem Schlüpfen im Spätwinter zunächst Blütenknospen, dann die Blüten und später die Blätter von Schlehensträuchern (und auch Zwetschgenbäumen). Der Falter fliegt sehr schnell und ist wegen seiner Färbung sehr unauffällig. Er gilt als gefährdet.

This little blue butterfly, namely the black hairstreak (Satyrium pruni), recently turned up in my garden to feast on the flowers of the Sweet Mock Orange (Philadelphus coronarius). After hatching in late winter, the caterpillars of the black hairstreak first feed on flower buds, then on the flowers, and later on the leaves of blackthorn bushes (and also plum trees). The butterfly flies very quickly and is very inconspicuous due to its colouring. It is considered to be endangered.

An einem schmalen Bachlauf war dieses Männchen der Blauflügel-Prachtlibelle (Calopteryx virgo) auf Insektenjagd und setzte sich auf ein Schilfblatt als Warte. Vorbeifliegende Beute wurde von hier aus sofort angegriffen. Mittlerweile wird diese Libellenart nicht mehr als gefährdet eingestuft.

By a narrow stream, this male Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) was hunting for insects and perched on a reed leaf to lie in wait. Prey flying past was immediately attacked from this vantage point. This species of Calopteryx is no longer classified as endangered.

Gerade noch rechtzeitig vor dem Ende der Blühsaison konnte ich vom Türkenbund (Lilium martagon) eine Aufnahme machen. Man sieht neben der wunderschönen Blüte eine bereits verwelkte (links) und oben sich bildende Fruchtstände. Die Aufnahme entstand in einem fränkischen Laubmischwald.
Der Türkenbund gilt in Deutschland nicht als gefährdet, ist jedoch nach der Bundesartenschutzverordnung besonders geschützt. Wie alle Liliengewächse ist der Türkenbund hochgiftig besonders für Katzen.

Just in time before the end of the flowering season, I managed to take a photograph of the martagon lily (Lilium martagon). Alongside the beautiful flower, you can see one that has already wilted (on the left) and fruit clusters forming at the top. The photograph was taken in a mixed deciduous forest in Franconia.
The martagon lily is not considered endangered in Germany, but is specially protected under the Federal Species Protection Ordinance. Like all members of the lily family, the martagon lily is highly toxic, particularly to cats.

Die historische Altstadt von Dinkelsbühl ist noch vollständig von ihrer Stadtmauer umschlossen. In dem Städtchen an der Romantischen Straße sind dreiviertel der Häuser über 350 Jahre alt. Viele von ihnen wurden direkt an die Mauer angebaut. Von beiden Seiten schmiegen sich Gärten malerisch an die Stadtbefestigung an, kleine Weiher schmücken den Mauergraben und auf der Gesamtlänge von 2.500 Metern befinden sich seit dem Mittelalter 20 Türme und vier Stadttore nahezu unverändert. Die Aufnahme entstand am Rand eines Auwalds. Der Kleine Schillerfalter (Apatura ilia) steht auf der Vorwarnliste der Roten Liste Deutschland. Eine Besonderheit: Der Kleine Schillerfalter saugt keinen Blütennektar. Männchen: Zur Mineralstoffaufnahme saugen sie an Aas, Kot, Baumsäften, feuchten Bodenstellen, Pfützen auf Waldwegen. Diese abgeblüten Blütenstände vom Wiesen-Bocksbart (Tragopogon pratensis) fand ich am Straßenrand. Da der Fruchtstand sehr viel größer ist als beim Löwenzahn, kann man beide Pflanzen eigentlich nicht verwechseln. Alle Teile des Wiesenbocksbarts sind essbar. In der Türkei ist er als Yemlik bekannt und wird gerne als Salat verzehrt.

I found these spent inflorescences of the meadow goat’s-beard (Tragopogon pratensis) by the roadside. As the fruit head is much larger than that of the dandelion, it is actually impossible to confuse the two plants. All parts of the meadow goat’s-beard are edible. In Turkey, it is known as ‘yemlik’ and is often eaten in salads.

Man findet immer frischen Grabschmuck am Grab von (Jacob Ludwig) Felix Mendelsohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847), dem großen deutschen Komponisten, der schon in jungen Jahren verstarb. Er ist in einem schlichten Familiengrab auf dem Dreifaltigkeitsfriedhof I am Halleschen Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg bestattet.
Zur Einstimmung eine wunderschöne Einspielung der Ouvertüre zum Sommernachtstraum von Felix-Mendelsohn Barthody.

One always finds fresh grave decorations at the grave of (Jacob Ludwig) Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847), the great German composer who died at a young age. He is buried in a simple family grave in the Trinity Cemetery I at Hallesches Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Eigentlich ist die Oberfläche der Flügel beim Kleinen Schillerfalter (Apatura ilia) dunkelbraun. Beim männlichen Falter gibt es aber eine Besonderheit: Wenn die Flügel auf- und zugeklappt werden und bei einer bestimmten Lichteinstrahlung, sehen sie leuchtend blau aus. Das Schillern entsteht durch Lichtbrechung an speziellen Schuppenstrukturen auf den Flügeln -ein sogenannter struktureller Farbeffekt, kein Pigment ist dafür verantwortlich. Bei Weibchen ist dieses Schillern praktisch nicht zu sehen. Der Große Schillerfalter zeigt den gleichen Farbeffekt.
Die Aufnahme entstand an einem Waldrand. Der Kleine Schillerfalter steht auf der Vorwarnliste der Roten Liste Deutschland.

Actually, the surface of the wings of the Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia) is dark brown. However, there is a special feature in the male butterfly: when the wings are opened and closed, and under certain lighting conditions, they appear to glow with a bright blue color. This iridescence is caused by light refraction on special scale structures on the wings – a so-called structural color effect, not by pigment. In females, this shimmering is practically not visible. The Purple Emperor (Apatura iris) shows the same color effect.
The photo was taken at the edge of a forest. The Lesser Purple Emperor butterfly is on the warning list of the German Red List.

Dieses kopulierende Paar des Seidigen Fallkäfers (Cryptocephalus sericeus) konnte ich längere Zeit auf einer Acker-Witwenblume (Knautia arvensis) beobachten. Die Körperlänge des Käfers ist 4-7 mm! Lustig war, dass das Weibchen sich nicht stören ließ und weiter ruhig Blütenpollen verzehrte. Der Name Fallkäfer kommt vom typischen Schutzverhalten dieser Käfer, bei dem sie sich bei Gefahr plötzlich fallen lassen, z. B. von Blättern oder Zweigen auf den Boden, um sich zu verstecken oder Feinde zu täuschen.

I was able to observe this mating pair of the Silky Leaf Beetle (Cryptocephalus sericeus) for quite some time on a field scabious (Knautia arvensis). The body length of the beetle is 4-7 mm! It was amusing that the female remained undisturbed and calmly continued feeding on flower pollen. The name "leaf beetle" (literally "fall beetle" in German) comes from the beetles’ typical defense behavior: when threatened, they suddenly drop - for example, from leaves or branches to the ground - to hide or deceive predators.

Als schimmernde, flimmernde Gauklerin beschreibt Heinrich Heine in einem Gedicht eine Libelle. Im Bild (und PiP) eine weibliche Prachtlibelle (Calopteryx virgo), die ich auf Beute lauernd in einem lichten Wald fand.

As a shimmering, flickering juggler, Heinrich Heine describes a dragonfly in a poem. Pictured (also in the PiP) is a female beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo), which I found lying in wait for prey in a sunlit forest.
