We stayed at this Estancia near Ruta 40 overnight, a really interesting experience. As far as I remember, the size of the Estancia is about 80 km², Don Enrice, the owner, told us.Tapi Aike was established in 1904 by von Heinz and Stubenrauch in a relatively high area with poor pastures on the plateau. The name is ancient, an Aonikenk place name for the small brackish lagoon that is located there. The word means "kidney" perhaps it was a good hunting place for guanacos.- scanned slide, Minolta X700

The northern begin of dirt Ruta 41 (south of the village Los Antiguos), called Loma Atravesada. I've done this road 3 times, in 2000, 2010 and 2015. Nothing changed, except a bridge has been built, where in 2000 we had to cross the river bed. The road leads through perfect loneliness and wonderful landscapes. Chilean border station and Refugio on the Andes mountain pass "Paso de Uspallata". As you can see, not much traffic up there ;-) The peak in the centre is Cerro Cabeza del Inca (4193 m). The summits right behind are Punta Desconocida (4360 m) and Cerro Alto de la Posada (4260 m). The PiP shows the Argentinean border station and Refugio. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

The whole region's most famous park is Parque Provincial Aconcagua, home of 6962 m tall Cerro Aconcagua, the highest peak outside the Himalayas and a favorite climbing destination. Reaching the summit requires a commitment of at least 13 to 15 days, including acclimatization time. A part of Aconcagua is seen in the far background.
