Nicht wenige der Augsburger Lechkanäle haben ihren frühen Ursprung in alten Flussrinnsalen, zum überwiegenden Teil aber sind sie auf eine künstliche Anlage zurückzuführen.
Bereits im Jahre 982 ist erstmals ein Wasserlauf durch die Stadt in einer Niederschrift bezeugt. Als 1187 der Stadt erlaubt wurde, Wasser vom Lech durch die Stadt abzuleiten, werden zum ersten Mal die Lechkanäle erwähnt. Im Jahre 1276 zählte man in Augsburg fünf Lechkanäle mit zehn Mühlen.
Der Hintere Lech hieß im Mittelalter "Geumulners Laech", benannt nach der hier gelegenen Geumühle.
Nachdem Augsburg 1806 in Bayern eingegliedert wurde, entwickelten sich Gässchen wie Vorderer Lech (PiP1), Mittlerer Lech (PiP 2) und Hinterer Lech (PiP 3) zu einem Viertel für Arme.

In den 1980er Jahren führte man hier eine Altstadtsanierung durch und die damals etwas heruntergekommenen Häuser wandelten sich zu ansehnlichen Wohnungen, wodurch natürlich auch die Mieten gestiegen sind. Der vorher verborgene Hintere Lech wurde im Zuge dieser Sanierung wieder aufgedeckt. Im Anschluss ließen sich hier und in der Umgebung Boutiquen, Bars und Kneipen nieder. Quite a few of the Augsburg Lech canals have their early origins in old river trickles, but the majority can be traced back to an artificial system.
As early as 982, a watercourse through the city was first mentioned in a document. When the city was allowed to drain water from the River Lech through the city in 1187, the Lech canals are mentioned for the first time. In 1276 there were five Lech canals with ten mills in Augsburg.
In the Middle Ages the "Hintere Lech" (rear Lech) was called "Geumulners Laech", named after the "Geumühle" (Geu mill) located here.
After Augsburg was incorporated into Bavaria in 1806, alleys such as "Vorderer Lech" (front Lech) (PiP 1), "Mittlerer Lech" (middle Lech) (PiP 2) and "Hinterer Lech" (rear Lech) (PiP 3) developed into a quarter for the poor.

In the 1980s, the old town was renovated and the houses, which were a bit shabby at the time, were converted into handsome apartments, which of course also increased rents. The previously hidden "Hintere Lech" was again uncovered in the course of this renovation. Afterwards, boutiques, bars and pubs settled here and in the surrounding area. ➽ Das Butzenbergle in Augsburg hat keine einzige Hausnummer und auch keinen Hauseingang. Es ist ein schmaler, meistens nur rund einen Meter breiter, teilweise überdachter und gepflasteter Weg, der den Hang von der Innenstadt (Oberstadt) zum Handwerkerviertel (Unterstadt) hinabführt. Dort, wo das Butzenbergle in den Hunoldsgraben mündet, liegt das griechische Lokal Nikos Tavernaki - dieses Haus gehörte meinen Großeltern, meine Mama ist dort aufgewachsen. (PiP)
Für den Namen "Butzenbergle" ist wahrscheinlich der hier im 16. Jhd. ansässige italienische Kaufmann Honoratio Pozzo verantwortlich. Die Staßenbezeichung könnte als "Verschwäbelung" seines Namens gedeutet werden.

It is a narrow, mostly only around one meter wide, partially covered and cobbled path that leads down the slope from the city center (Upper town) to the "Handwerkerviertel/Artisan district" (Lower town). Where the "Butzenbergle" flows into the "Hunoldsgraben" is the Greek restaurant Nikos Tavernaki - this house belonged to my grandparents, my mom grew up there. (PiP)

Die Jakobervorstadt ist ein historischer Stadtteil von Augsburg und bildete sich im Mittelalter als Vorstadt östlich der ursprünglichen Stadt. Ihr Mittelpunkt ist die Pilgerkirche St. Jakob, die ihr auch den Namen gab.
Hier lebte vorwiegend die soziale Unterschicht der Reichsstadt Augsburg. Aus diesem Grund legten die Fugger ihre Armensiedlung Fuggerei hier an und nicht etwa in der Oberstadt. Dieser Status blieb dem Stadtteil auch in den folgenden Jahrhunderten erhalten. Im Zeitalter der Industrialisierung lebten in der Jakobervorstadt viele Fabrikarbeiterfamilien.
Heute leben dort im Vergleich zum gesamten Augsburg besonders viele Singles, weniger Kinder und mehr Menschen mit ausländischem Pass.
Wie auch im angrenzenden Handwerkerviertel befinden sich dort heute viele kleine Läden und Restaurants - und ein Bummel entlang der alten Stadtbefestigung und Stadtgräben lohnt sich auch.

The "Jakobervorstadt" is a historical district of Augsburg and was formed in the Middle Ages as a suburb east of the original city. Its center is the St. Jakob pilgrimage church, which also gave it its name.
The social lower class of the imperial city of Augsburg lived mainly here. For this reason, the rich merchant family Fugger set up their social settlement "Fuggerei" here and not in the upper town. The district retained this status in the centuries that followed. In the age of industrialization, many families of factory workers lived in "Jakobervorstadt".
Today, compared to the whole of Augsburg, live there a particularly large number of singles, fewer children and more people with a foreign passport.
As in the neighboring Artisan district, there are now many small shops and restaurants - and a stroll along the old city walls and moats is also worthwhile.

➽ Heute vor einer Woche wurde in der Augsburger Innenstadt ein Familienvater, während einer verbalen Auseinandersetzung mit einer Gruppe Jugendlicher, von einem 17jährigen durch einen brutalen Schlag an die Schläfe totgeschlagen. Das Opfer war Angehöriger der Berufsfeuerwehr Augsburg und war privat mit seiner Ehefrau und einem befreundeten Ehepaar auf dem Christkindelsmarkt unterwegs. Auch der Freund wurde von den Jugendlichen schwer verletzt.

Eigentlich wollte ich zuerst nichts zu diesem Thema posten, aber da einige von euch meine Verbindung zur Feuerwehr kennen und mich deshalb angeschrieben haben, habe ich mich entschieden, dieses Foto zu zeigen um mich nochmals für eure Besorgnis und Anteilnahme zu bedanken. Es zeigt das Gerätehaus der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Pfersee, bei der mein Mann und mein Sohn Mitglieder sind. Die Feuerwehrler und auch Passanten haben zum Gedenken an den getöteten 49jähren Kollegen Lichter auf dem Zaun aufgestellt.

The friend was also seriously injured by the adolescents.

Actually I didn't want to post anything on this topic at first, but because some of you know my connection to the fire brigade and have therefore written to me, I decided to show this photo to thank you again for your concern and sympathy. It shows the equipment house of the Volunteer Firebrigade Pfersee, where my husband and son are members. The firefighters and passers-by have set up lights on the fence in memory of the killed 49-year-old colleague.

➽ Das Thelottviertel wurde von dem Architekten Sebastian Buchegger als erste Gartenstadt Deutschlands in den Jahren 1905 bis 1929 geplant und gebaut.
Der Begriff Gartenstadt geht auf den britischen Stadtplaner Ebenezer Howard zurück, der mit „Gartenstädten“ sozialreformerische Gedanken verband.
In Deutschland hatte es seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts die Gründung von Villenkolonien für das betuchte Bürgertum gegeben. Es wollte sich von Lärm, Dreck und Enge der Großstädte befreien.
Es musste aber auch für die Wohnprobleme von Arbeitern etwas getan werden, es sollte weiträumig und niedrig gebaut werden, gesunde Wohnungen sollten Zugang zu einem Garten haben.
Wegen seiner Nähe zur Innenstadt aber auch zur Wertach und dem Wittelsbacher Park, ist das Thelottviertel heute eines der begehrtesten Wohnviertel in Augsburg. Die meisten der Gebäude stehen unter Ensemble- oder Denkmalschutz. Quelle: AugsburgWiki

➽ Über den Eisenberg (PiP 1) gelangt man in die Unterstadt von Augsburg. Hier befindet sich unterhalb der Augsburger Hochterrasse das Lechviertel. Es war jahrhundertelang das Zentrum des Augsburger Handwerks und wird daher auch Handwerkerviertel (PiP 2) genannt.
Nach dem Verlust der Reichsfreiheit und der Eingliederung nach Bayern im Jahre 1806 wurde aus dem einstigen Handwerkszentrum ein Wohnviertel für arme Bürger. Die Häuser zerfielen, Unrat stapelte sich in den engen Gassen, Krankheiten breiteten sich aus. Auch nach dem Wiederaufbau, der der starken Zerstörung während des Zweiten Weltkriegs folgte, blieb das Lechviertel ein Stadtteil, der vornehmlich von sozial schwachen Augsburgern bewohnt wurde.
Pläne des Stadtrates in den 1960er Jahren, das Lechviertel komplett abzureißen, um Platz für moderne Neubauten zu schaffen, wurden aufgrund des breiten Protestes der Augsburger Bevölkerung nicht umgesetzt.
Anfang der 1980er Jahre wurde begonnen, das Lechviertel umfassend zu sanieren. Den alten Gassen wurde ihre historische Kopfsteinpflasterung zurückgegeben, die nach dem Krieg mehrheitlich überdeckten Lechkanäle (PiP 3) wurden wieder freigelegt. Viele mittelalterliche Handwerkerhäuser (PiP 4) sind inzwischen begehrte Wohnadressen, in den verwinkelten Straßenzügen haben sich zahlreiche Boutiquen, Bars und Kneipen (PiP 5) angesiedelt. Via the "Eisenberg" (Iron Hill) (PiP 1) you reach the lower city of Augsburg. Here is located below the "Augsburger Hochterrasse" (High terrace) the "Lechviertel" (Lech district). It was for centuries the center of Augsburg craftsmanship and is therefore also called "Handwerkerviertel" (Artisan district) (PiP 2).
After the loss of imperial freedom and the incorporation into Bavaria in 1806, the former artisan district became a residential district for poor citizens. The houses crumbled, filth piled up in the narrow streets, diseases spread. Even after the reconstruction, which followed the strong destruction during the Second World War, the Lechviertel remained a district that was inhabited primarily by socially weak Augsburgers.
Plans of the city council in the 1960s to demolish the Lechviertel completely to make room for modern new buildings were not implemented due to the widespread protest of the Augsburg population.
At the beginning of the 1980s, the Lechviertel was comprehensively renovated. The ancient streets were returned their historic cobblestone pavement, the after the war mostly covered "Lechkanäle" (Lech canels) (PiP 3) were exposed again. Many medieval artisan houses (PiP 4) have become coveted addresses, in the winding streets are numerous boutiques, bars and pubs (PiP 5) settled. Von Augsburg sprach man zur Zeit der Renaissance als "Goldene und reichste Stadt der Welt". Die Qualitätsarbeiten der Handwerker haben Reichtum in die Stadt gebracht. Noch heute sind die besten Arbeiten in Museen von Augsburger Herkunft. "Made in Augsburg" war eine Marke, egal ob es sich um Goldschmiedearbeiten, Waffen, Schreinerarbeiten, Uhren oder Bücher handelte. Was aus Augsburg kam, war gut. In the old artisan district are still many small craft shops, jewelry shops, small boutiques and restaurants - a stroll through the quarter worthwhile and is more homey than in a mall!

➽ Das Findelgässchen ist eine kurze, enge Gasse in der Altstadt von Augsburg. Durch ein Waisenhaus für Findelkinder, das hier im 15. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde, erhielt es wohl seinen Namen. Meine Oma, die in der Nähe wohnte, erzählte mir, dass dort auch noch Anfang des 20. Jahrhundert Babies ausgesetzt wurden.

➽ The "Findelgässchen" (Foundling alley) is a short, narrow alley in the old town of Augsburg. It was probably named after a orphanage for foundlings, built here in the 15th century. My granny, who lived nearby, told me, that there were still babies being abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century.
