Anne Elliott has posted:

The 14 odds and ends I posted this morning were all taken at Keith Logan's acreage on 7 July 2019. The next photos I edit and post were taken that afternoon, when we visited URSA, just a short drive from the Logan's.

A large group of us spent the morning of 7 July 2019 at the home and property of Keith and Sandy Logan. They live NW of Cochrane on a 35-acre parcel of land. The group split in half and took turns to look at Keith's stunning photography and incredible woodwork and also to bio/blitz their land, to record all flora and fauna seen. We were treated to coffee and delicious cake in Keith's enormous woodworking barn. We all agree - if you sit in one of Keith's wooden chairs, you'll see that no chair could ever be more comfortable - they are simply amazing!

www.keithlogan.com/Keith_Logan/Photography/Photography.html

www.keithlogan.com/Keith_Logan/Woodworking/Woodworking.html

Some people saw a number of birds, though they were almost all very distant sightings. I think the closest were a pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, feeding young that were in a tree cavity. I did manage to get a shot of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, too.

On a visit like this, I am always torn between looking for birds, wildflowers, or fungi - not to mention any cats and dogs. This day was a mix of all three - the kind of day I love. Actually, we were surprised that there were not many wildflowers to be seen. Not sure if this means we are a bit late for them. Our weather has been totally insane since New Year, so who knows what is early and what is late. I was happy to see the odd fungus here and there in the Aspen forest.

All morning, we were followed around the garden by the Logan's two enormous dogs - two beautiful, friendly Newfoundland dogs, named Sally and Blueberry (?). What gorgeous dogs these are! I think food must be on their mind all the time. Whenever someone would sit and eat their lunch, either one or both dogs would come over and stand or sit and look longingly at what was being eaten. Such sweet dogs.

I love to see their cats, too. On previous visits, there were three cats, but I don't know if they only have two now. What a beautiful place they are fortunate enough to call 'home'.

After lunch, we drove a short distance to another place, URSA, which stands for Universal Rehabilitation Service Agency. Before non-profit URSA obtained the area, it used to belong to W.O.Mitchell, who used it as a retreat. We were introduced to Ben, who lives in W.O. Mitchell's beautiful old cabin. Ben's passion is creating amazing metal sculptures and many of his works are scattered on the land around the cabin.

"William Ormond Mitchell, PC OC better known as W. O. Mitchell (March 13, 1914 – February 25, 1998) was a Canadian writer and broadcaster. His "best-loved" novel is Who Has Seen the Wind (1947), which portrays life on the Canadian Prairies and sold almost a million copies in Canada. As a broadcaster, he is known for his radio series Jake and the Kid, which aired on CBC Radio between 1950 and 1956 and was also about life on the Prairies.

In 1973, Mitchell was made an officer of the Order of Canada. The list of other honours Mitchell has received includes honorary doctorates from five Canadian universities and being sworn in as a Member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada on November 5, 1992. In 2000, Mitchell was honoured by the government of Canada with his image on a postage stamp." From Wikipedia.

"Nestled in 18 acres of truly Albertan streams, trees and wildlife, URSA is a place that welcomes us all. The buildings and land were obtained in 2009 by Universal Rehabilitation Service Agency (URSA) with a single purpose: to create a retreat space where all individuals, regardless of ability, can experience the beauty of a relaxing and calming retreat space. We rent the URSA Retreat Centre to external groups to subsidize running it for our clients."

youtu.be/iuMFd3D6Y3k

As far as the weather was concerned, we were so lucky. Just a few minutes of light rain and that was it. Just enough to get rain spots on the camera lens.

Thanks to Keith and Sandy for such an enjoyable time! Always a real treat to spend time with them at their home and acreage. Thank you to Stephen and Dorothy for driving the four of us there and back. Greatly appreciated, as always.

I did try to get an OK photo when a group of us was there for a BBQ just a matter of days earlier, but I didn't get a single photo that was fit to post. I would imagine that this little bird has probably left for the season by now. She had been extra busy at their feeders full of sugar-water, getting ready for her long migration journey across the Gulf of Mexico. Her nonstop journey will be more than 1,030 km.

Thanks so much, Dorothy and Stephen, for such a lovely time! The meal was delicious, and it was so much fun to get a better look at your tiny Hummingbird. Like other years, you are going to miss her when she leaves!

I love Lilies and was happy to find two flowers to photograph when I visited the Reader Rock Garden on 27 June 2017. The sun was shining and, for the first time in quite a while, it wasn't windy, just a very slight breeze. I used to love going to this garden, usually after I had been volunteering in the same part of the city. Since I stopped volunteering (after a volunteer 'career' of 37 years!), I haven't been going. Two days ago, I decided that I had better go, or the plants would be in seed before too long. As it was, most of the lily flowers were either dead or on their last legs and no good for photographs.

"Lilium martagon (martagon lily or Turk's cap lily is a Eurasian species of lily. It has a widespread native region extending from Portugal east through Europe and Asia as far east as Mongolia.

The flower colour is typically a pink-purple, with dark spots, but is quite variable, extending from near white to near black. The flowers are scented. Numerous flowers are borne on each plant, and up to 50 can be found on vigorous plants.

Lilium martagon, like many in the genus, is highly toxic to cats and ingestion often leads to fatal renal failure; households and gardens which are visited by cats are strongly advised against keeping this plant or placing dried flowers where a cat may brush against them and become dusted with pollen which they then consume while cleaning." From Wikipedia.
At least in my area of the city, no snow had settled anywhere, which was a relief. The ground is wet, which is desperately needed, especially for farmers. The temperature is 4C and the sky is a mix of cloud and small patches of blue sky. The next two days look good (Easter weekend), but mixed precipitation is in the forecast for the coming week.

However, this is one of those times, and I will probably have to finish off descriptions, tags, etc. late tomorrow evening. I have to set my two alarm clocks and kitchen timer for about 4:15 am (and it's already just after 1:00 am!). Just hope I don't sleep right through my alarms, as does happen sometimes. Have to be at the meeting place by 6:30 am, ready to spend a very long day travelling to and from the Drumheller area in the Alberta Badlands, east of Calgary. Takes roughly two hours to get there. Think I'd better get off my computer and head for bed! (Later: decided to stay up all night, as I was worried that I would most likely sleep right through my two alarm clocks and a kitchen timer if I tried to get just a couple of hours sleep!).

After a volunteer shift on 23 July 2014, I wasn't too far away from the Erlton/Roxboro Natural Area, where I was finally going to go on a botany walk. Having been to this location several times before, I knew it was a short, easy, flat trail, and that I could go as far as I wanted and then turn back early, which is what I did. I had missed pretty well all the botany and birding walks the previous few months, which was quite depressing. The main thing I wanted to see were the Nodding / Musk Thistles, as they are my favourite species of Thistle.

With a couple of hours to "kill", I had spent them at the Reader Rock Garden, which was just a few minutes' drive away from the evening botany walk location.

I've only been able to get out on two walks since the car accident I was involved in (but not at fault) on 28 November 2015, and barely got any new photos. Today, I have had to cancel another volunteer shift and will have to cancel a dental appointment for tomorrow, just so that I can do things like phoning my Insurance Company. Hoping I don't need to go and report it to the Police. Also need to make an appointment to take my car in to be looked at. Yesterday morning, just as I was arrivng at the meeting place for a morning birding walk, I noticed a slight rattling sound. Then, in the evening, the rattle was much worse, sometimes sounding like one metal piece was scraping against another. Such a pain at any time, but December is a really bad month to be without a drivable car!

This photo is of a beautiful Lily that I found growing at the Reader Rock Garden on 23 July 2014. Not sure if this is Lilium martagon. It has a tall, central stem, with quite a display of these flowers along it.
The west entrance to the Zoo will be closed from 13 October till April 2016, so I did want to get in another visit before then. I don't like the drive home on Deerfoot Trail from the north entrance, so tend not to go to the Zoo all winter.

Anne Elliott has posted:

This gorgeous Lily was enormous! Not sure I've ever seen such a huge flower.

On 7 August 2015, four of us were extremely fortunate to have the chance to visit the home and highly varied topographic 62-acre property belonging to Frances and David Dover. We felt honoured and privileged to meet and spend time with Frances and David, and also their daughter Carolyn and her husband Clair. A delightful family who welcomed us so warmly into their home and land.

This acreage of grassland, forest, rolling hills - and special gardens - is not far from Millarville, SW of Calgary. In fact, it's in an area that I often drive through when I only have time for, or only feel like doing, a short drive. Amazing what little gems exist out there.

This is not just a beautiful property, but is very special for various reasons. For one thing, read any history of Alberta and you will find the Dover family, including David's mother, Mary Dover. Second, among the trees and open "lawns", there are Peony flower beds, containing 100-150 heritage Peonies, each one different, that have now multiplied to more than 300 plants. Unfortunately, they bloomed a couple of weeks early this year, and all the flowers had gone to seed. Another open area had a different kind of ground cover - Thyme, which smelled wonderful. If I remember correctly, this was the open space where the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra performed on one occasion!

There are two large ponds on the property and another smaller area of water that they hope to turn into a Japanese Garden. There is a total of seven wetland basins, including these. It was while walking around the Japanese Garden that a large brown 'shape' could just be seen through the dense trees - a handsome Moose buck. I will look properly at the four or so photos I just managed to get and may slip one of them into my photostream sometime soon, just for the record, definitely not for the photo quality : ) This was also where a Great Horned Owl was seen flying through the trees by some of us (not me, ha!).

There are grassy paths winding through the acreage, up and down hill, that take David seven hours to mow. They are not pristine, velvety paths, but instead, they seem to take nothing away from the wildness of the whole area. One of the animals that have passed through is the Cougar. In fact, several years ago, I saw a video taken on a nearby (or adjacent?) property, where a 'kill' and night-time camera had been set up and a total of six different Cougar individuals were seen!

Even the Dover's home is unique and beautiful. It is completely built of concrete (and glass) - floors, walls, ceilings, roof, deck, and so on. A Hummingbird feeder and regular bird feeders, set up on the patio, attract a variety of birds. We sat on the patio after our walk to eat our packed lunches - and to enjoy a delicious Orange Pound Cake that Frances had made for us, along with refreshing Iced Tea - thank you so much for going to this trouble, Frances! While I was waiting for one of three tiny Calliope (?) Hummingbirds to come back, I was lucky enough to see a little Mountain Chickadee, along with many Pine Siskins. We could also hear a Red-tailed Hawk in the area. Saw a total of 22 bird species this day.

There is just so much I could write about this visit and family. Instead, or for now, I will add several links to more information on the Internet. This was a memorable day for us.
A breathtaking Lily

Thank you so much, Frances and David, Carolyn and Clair, for being so kind and welcoming us into your home and gardens.
Lilies of any kind are one of my favourite flowers to photograph when I call in at this garden. Friends are posting very recent photos of beautiful flowers, both garden and wild, and I still haven't seen any at all, other than a few Prairie Crocuses. I need to get out very soon! Each of the last two or three springs, what tended to happen was that, by the time I finally did get out there, quite a few of the plants had already developed their seedpods. So many plants seem to last such a short time.

The temperature this morning, 29 April 2015, is 11C and the sun is shining. There is a 60% chance of a shower this afternoon, with a temperature of 15C. Hard to believe, but yesterday, the temperature got up to 26C between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm! When I checked the forecast, snow-rain showers are forecast for Sunday. We really need the moisture or we will be heading into drought.

Hopefully, this year will be without major flooding or early snow storm damage, both of which would close down most of the parks and natural areas.

This morning, the temperature is 6C (windchill 4C), but it is supposed to soar to a balmy 17C this afternoon.

Thought this would be a change from winter scenes, old barns, and tiny owl images! I prefer a plainer background for my Lily photos, which is no doubt why I never posted this one before. Maybe someone who lives in Boston will see this and it will remind them that spring and summer really will arrive eventually! Those poor people over on the east coast - what a brutal time they've been having and continue to have, with cold temperatures and THAT much snow!

This photo was taken at the Reader Rock Garden on 10 August 2011. Last year, 2014, was not a good year for getting out to photograph flowers (or most things, actually), thanks to severe pain from inflammation of the rotator cuffs in both shoulders, plus weather-related reasons including a lot of rain. The devastating snow storm in September, that damaged or destroyed thousands of trees in the city, closed the parks and natural areas.

What wonderfully mild weather we are having at the moment (9 December 2014). This morning, it's 8°C (windchill 6°C) and overcast. The sun is supposed to come out this afternoon. Temperature should be 9°C tomorrow and the next day. If only every "winter" could be like this!
</media:text>

Having been to this location several times before, I knew it was a short, easy, flat trail, and that I could go as far as I wanted and then turn back early, which is what I did. The main thing I wanted to see were the Nodding / Musk Thistles, as these are my favourite species of Thistle. They are called a weed, but I love to see them. The sun was unfortunately in the wrong direction, so I was only able to get a handful of shots, but better than nothing.

With a couple of hours to "kill", I spent them at the Reader Rock Garden, which was just a few minutes' drive away from the evening botany walk location. I love seeing the different species of Lily, including this one.

A good day to post a colourful image. Photo of this beautiful Lily was taken on 24 July 2013 at the Reader Rock Garden. Just checked the weather forecast for Calgary and we are supposed to get a few mild days coming up, which will feel so good. Sunday is the first of this year's Christmas Bird Counts that I will be going on - for the city of Calgary. I hope all the birders out there who are taking part in any of the Counts, will have fun and find at least a few good species. This is the 62nd Christmas Count for this city and apparently Calgary is always one of the top counts in North America in our level of participation! Last year, there was a record turnout of 249 birders for our count, 136 in the field and 113 feeder-watchers.

Today's three photos are the first ones I've posted on ipernity by transferring them individually from my Flickr photostream. Thanks to the ipernity team for setting up such a quick, easy way to make our transfers. Usually, I've been posting to ipernity first - more convenient - but from now on I'm posting to Flickr first and then transferring. Took maybe less than five minutes to transfer today's three shots, compared to the 3-4 hours it has been taking me (for some strange reason!) each day this past week. Feels so good : )

Feels so good : )
</media:text>
