At London King’s Cross station, headed to Edinburgh. The ride was comfortable, on-time, and fast – 5 hours for roughly 400 miles. Sort of ordinary countryside for the first half, then once into northern England it got much more interesting, particularly along the coast. I still haven’t the knack down of taking photos from the train, so only a few.

From the train to Folkestone, taken right after we came out of King’s Cross station. Pictured here are condominiums built within historic gasholder frames, per the ‘gasholders’ link, the frames were built between 1860 and 1880; the only historic picture that I could find of a gasholder when it was used for storing gas is on the Wikepedia page. Per the KnightFrank page, these units are selling for £825,000 - £7,000,000 ($1M to $9.2M). The weir at Teddington, first built in 1811 with the first lock, but rebuilt many times since due to damage from flooding. Based on various websites and pictures it appears that the portion closest to me may date back to the major reconstruction in the 1850’s, but that some or all of the portion further away was constructed in 1991-92; the newer portion includes two sluice gates. The building of the weir, in 1811, resulted in Teddington being the end of the tidal flow of the river. The hydro source linked below describes the weir and the plans to convert a portion of it to being used for electricity generation.

Just in case you’re wondering, the difference between a weir and what we commonly call a dam in the U.S. is that a weir (which is a small dam) is used to alter the flow of a river while ‘dam’ commonly refers to a structure designed to impound water, often in a reservoir. Water often flows across the top of a weir, while typically water only flows through a sluice gate on a dam. See the Wikipedia link.

Opened in 1937, the art deco designed station is one end of the District underground line and of the London Overground North line, and has through trains of the South Western Railway. While quite functional in appearance, the lines are much more distinctive and interesting than is typically the case with modern government buildings. I was using Richmond station to get from the District line to a local bus headed towards the Teddington Locks.

Etched plaque denoting the rebuilding, and 1858 reopening, of the Teddington Lock. The first lock at Teddington, built from timber, had opened in 1811 but ended up needing frequent repair, thus the rebuilding and expansion of the locks. The rebuilt launch lock opened in 1858; the barge lock didn’t open until 1904.

London Teddington Lock – Tough’s and Dunkirk (#0391)

Marker honoring Tough Brothers’ boatyard that was at Teddington Lock (noted in adjacent picture). The first boatyard (see Boatyard link below) at this location apparently dates back to 1850 with a tenant at the site being the Queens Bargemaster in the later 1800’s and having supplied boats for another shipbuilder in WWI. The Tough family bought the yard in the 1930’s, expanded business, and became the “muster point for the 'Little Ships’, for the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, which was organised locally by Douglas Tough.” (see the marker in the picture.)

In 2012 there was a commemoration of Dunkirk that involved a flotilla of more than 1000 small boats headed downstream from Teddington lock to honor the Dunkirk evacuation of 338,000 WWII troops using ‘little ships’. See the Commemoration link below for the story.

Poverty (the big boat) at the marina on the south side of the Teddington Lock. The days when life on the river was of the working class are definitely gone, but this even suggests that a carefree, bohemian, exploration by the historic narrow canal boat is also gone.

And then there’s the point about what replaced Tough Brothers’ Boatyard, the former occupant of the south bank at this point. Tough Brothers, which played a significant role in saving the lives of troops at Dunkirk in WWII (see adjacent posting), is replaced by The Wharf apartments (condominiums).From what I could find, the apartments at The Wharf represent a fairly wide range of prices – the online listing I found was for £1,000,000 ($1.3M) for a three-bedroom split level at the top with 1818 sq ft. but the listing also mentioned recent sales as low as £360,000 ($464K).

You have to look close, but there’s two footbridges here. One to the island (unnamed) in the middle of the river, one from that island to the north bank. The boats visible here are tied to a dock off the south side of that unnamed island.

There’s actually three locks visible here, though they might be hard to see. The boat in the picture (the ‘Gin Sting’!) is headed towards what is referred to in Wikipedia as the ‘launch lock’ that runs along the shore. On the left side of the island is the wider ‘barge lock’ and barely visible next to that is the ‘skiff lock’. Confusing here (at least for my orientation) is that, due to the twists of the Thames at this point, the boat is going west but downstream (towards the North Sea, which is to the east). The earlier-posted satellite photo may make this clearer.

The term ‘launch lock’ used by Wikipedia was initially confusing to me since I think of a boat that would be described as a ‘launch’ as being about the size of a skiff, and there is a separate ‘skiff lock’. I asked a British contact and his description led me to compare the British and American definitions of ‘launch’. It turns out ‘launch’ in British English includes ‘motor driven’ transport boats while the American definitions does stress smaller boats. So, speaking ‘British’, a launch would included boats similar to the narrow boats used for freight hauling in the 1800’s and into the early 1900’s.
