In der Nähe von Schweinfurt befindet sich das Schloss Mainberg in romantischer Lage über dem Main, dessen Geschichte über tausend Jahre zurückreicht. Der markante Turm wurde zwischen 900 und 1000 n. Chr. erbaut. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hatte das Schloss immer wieder wechselnde Besitzer. Zurzeit wird das Schloss im Internet für rund 3,2 Mio. Euro zum Verkauf angeboten. Diese Morgenstimmung erlebte ich kürzlich im Maintal. Die Gegenlichtaufnahme entstand auf der Mainbrücke zwischen Retzbach und Zellingen. Die Felsformation links besteht aus Muschelkalk und ist der ehemalige Prallhang des Mains bei Retzbach. In weiten Bereichen wird hier Weinbau betrieben.

I recently experienced this morning mood in the Main Valley. The backlit photograph was taken on the Main bridge between Retzbach and Zellingen. The rock formation on the left consists of shell limestone and is the former impact slope of the Main near Retzbach. Viticulture is practiced here in some areas.

Ein Spätherbst-Morgen am Main. Im Bild die alte Mainbrücke, links im Hintergrund die Steinburg (s. Notiz) und rechts das Heizkraftwerk (s. PiP). Im Hintergrund die berühmten Weinberge Würzburger Stein. Neben den drei Schornsteinen des Kraftwerks ist der neue Druck-Wärmespeicher zu sehen (s. PiP), in dem überschüssige Energie des Kraftwerks als rund 3000 Kubikmeter 130 Grad heißes Wasser mit einem Wärmeinhalt von 175.000 kWh (!) gespeichert wird. Also einer der Beiträge Würzburgs zur Energiewende.

The famous Würzburger Stein vineyards in the background. Ein ruhiger, freundlicher Herbstmorgen in Würzburg am Main: Auf dem Fluss ziehen zwei Ruderer ihre Bahn, am Uferhang des Nikolausberges leuchten die herbstlichen Bäume und hoch oben lugt das "Käppele" (die Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Heimsuchung) aus der Farbenpracht, die im Flusswasser schön gespiegelt wird.

Dieses Wolken-Erlebnis hatten meine Frau und ich bei einer Wanderung heute Morgen, als wir aus dem nebligen Maintal kommend den im Tal hängenden Nebel unter uns liegen sahen und bei schönstem Sonnenschein 100 m über dem Maintal einen fast unendlichen Blick über die fränkische Landschaft hatten. Gänsehaut pur!

My wife and I had this cloud experience on a hike this morning when, coming out of the foggy Main valley, we saw the fog hanging in the valley below us. We had an almost endless view over the Franconian landscape 100 m above the Main valley in the most beautiful sunshine. Pure goose bumps!

Bei einer Wanderung durch ein Naturschutzgebiet am Main bei Volkach eröffnete sich dieser schöne Blick auf den Main mit der in Franken bekannten Wallfahrtskapelle Maria im Weingarten (s. Notiz) im Hintergrund. In dieser Kapelle befindet sich eines der bedeutendsten Werke des fränkischen Bildschniitzers Tilman Riemenschneider. Der bewanderte Weg war der sogenannte "Dschungelpfad", der über einige hundert Meter entlang des Mains verläuft und an einigen Stellen schwierig zu begehen ist und deswegen schon etliche Unfälle zur Folge hatte. Der Weg ist deshalb auch nicht mehr ausgeschildert und wird nicht mehr beworben. Das Naturschutzgebiet unterhalb der Vogelsburg ist für die Region von großer Bedeutung.

During a hike through a nature reserve along the Main River near Volkach, this beautiful view of the Main opened up with the well-known pilgrimage chapel Maria im Weingarten (see note) in the background. In this chapel there is one of the most important works of the Franconian sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. The path we hiked was the so-called "jungle path", which runs along the Main for several hundred metres and is difficult to walk on in some places, which is why it has already caused several accidents. The path is therefore no longer signposted and is no longer advertised. The nature reserve below Vogelsburg Castle is of great importance for the region.

Diesen Satz aus der 1. Strophe des Frankenlied habe ich deswegen als Überschrift gewählt, weil Franken viele reizvolle Orte, Städte und Landschaften zu bieten hat, wo man genussvolle Ferien verbringen kann. Also: ein Reisetipp!
Im Foto sieht man im Vordergrund das Naturschutzgebiet "Mainhang an der Vogelsburg", in der Bildmitte links hinter Büschen weitgehend verborgen den Weinort Untereisenheim (siehe Notiz), den Main und auf der rechten Seite (s. Notiz) den Weinort Fahr. Die gesamten Berghänge im Foto sind von Weinbergen überzogen!
Das Foto entstand bei einer Wanderung durch das genannte Naturschutzgebiet.

I have chosen this sentence from the 1st strophe of the Franconians' song as a headline because Franconia has many charming places, cities and landscapes to offer, where you can spend enjoyable vacations. So: a travel tip!
In the photo you can see in the foreground the nature reserve "Mainhang an der Vogelsburg", in the middle of the picture on the left side largely hidden behind bushes the wine village Untereisenheim (see note), the Main river and on the right side (see note) the wine village Fahr. The entire mountain slopes in the photo are covered with vineyards!
The photo was taken during a hike through the aforementioned nature reserve.
The 1st strophe of the Franconian song in the wording:

Im Bild die Wurzelausläufer einer Platane, die solche bizarren Strukturen ausgebildet haben. In den Vertiefungen kann sich Wasser und Laub ansammeln, in dem Bakterien und Einzeller leben können. Ein Mini-Lebensraum (Biotop) ist entstanden.
Das Bild entstand im Uferbereich des Mains bei Randersacker.

In the picture, the root stolons of a sycamore tree that have formed such bizarre structures. Water and foliage can accumulate in the depressions, where bacteria and protozoa can live. A mini-habitat (biotope) has been created.

Zur Zeit präsentieren sich die Weinberge entlang der Mainschleife bei Escherndorf in wunderschönen Herbstfarben. Allerdings wird die Farbenpracht nicht lange dauern. Tiefe Temperaturen und Regen werden die Rebblätter schnell braun werden lassen und zum Abfallen bringen. Die rötlich-braunen Flächen sind die Parzellen mit Rotweintrauben. Dass in Escherndorf weltbekannte Spitzenweine erzeugt werden können, hängt nicht nur mit seiner Lage am temperaturregulierden Main zusammen, sondern auch mit seiner Geografie. Wie man im Bild erkennen kann, sind die Weinberge wie ein Parabolspiegel zur Sommersonne exponiert und garantieren so hohe Wärme- und Lichtausbeute. Die Weinberge im Bild links und rechts der Kirche direkt oberhalb der Bebauung (Escherndorfer Lump) sind die wertvollsten Flächen der Escherndorfer Weinberge.
Die Aufnahme entstand an einem regnerischen Herbstnachmittag.

At the moment, the vineyards along the river Main near Escherndorf present themselves in beautiful autumn colours. However, the blaze of colour will not last very long. Low temperatures and rain will quickly turn the vine leaves brown and cause them to fall. The reddish-brown areas are the vineyards with red wine grapes. The fact that world-renowned top wines can be produced in Escherndorf is not only due to its location on the temperature-regulating Main River, but also to its geography. As you can see in the picture, the vineyards are exposed to the summer sun like a parabolic mirror, guaranteeing high heat and light yields. The vineyards in the picture to the left and right of the church directly above the development (Escherndorfer Lump) are the most valuable areas of the Escherndorf vineyards.
The photo was taken on a rainy autumn afternoon.

In einem Weinberg nahe einer Papelallee in der Nähe des Mains sah ich diesen weiblichen Buntspecht (Dendrocopos major) bei der Nahrungssuche. Vermutlich hatte er eine Bruthöhle in einem der benachbarten Bäume. Beim Näherkommen flog der Buntspecht sofort auf. Übrigens können Buntspechte auch Nesträuber von Mehlschwalbennestern sein, welche, wie ich an Schwalbennestern am eigenen Haus beobachten konnte, die Nester aufbrechen und die Eier aufpicken, um an den Inhalt (auch Küken!) zu kommen. Ein seltsames Verhalten, das auch in der Literatur berichtet wird (siehe pdf-Datei)

In a vineyard near a poplar avenue close to the Main River, I saw this female great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) foraging. Presumably it had a breeding cavity in one of the neighbouring trees. When approaching, the woodpecker immediately flew up. By the way, great spotted woodpeckers can also be nest robbers of meal common house martins' nests, which, as I could observe on martins' nests at my own house, break open the nests and peck open the eggs to get at the contents (also young chicks!). A strange behaviour that is also reported in the literature (see pdf file).

Heute bei einer Wanderung entlang des Mains besuchte ich natürlich auch die Stelle, wo öfters Fischerboote ankern, die ich immer wieder in den letzten Jahren fotografiert habe (siehe PiP). Dieses Mal tuckerte gerade ein Partyboot vorbei, auf dessen oberster Etage sich einige Personen in Schlafsäcken von der ausgelassenen Feier der letzten Nacht erholten.
An den Farben des Fotos kann man erkennen, dass die Herbstzeit schon begonnen hat.

Today on a hike along the river Main I visited of course also the place where often fishing boats anchor, which I have photographed again and again in the recent years (see PiP). This time just a party boat chugged past, on whose uppermost floor some people in sleeping bags recovered from the exuberant celebration of the last night.
You can see from the colors of the photo that the autumn season has already begun.

Der kleine knapp 1,5 cm große, außerordentlich schön gefärbte Zottige Bienenkäfer Trichodes alvearius hat Larven, die sich in den Nestern von Wildbienen und Grabwespen räuberisch von deren Larven und Puppen ernähren. Deshalb wird der Käfer auch "Bienenwolf" genannt. Der Käfer sitzt gerne auf Blüten, wo er kleine Insekten jagt oder Pollen frisst. Der Körper und vor allem der Kopf sind zottig "behaart". Die rot-schwarze Farbe dieses ungiftigen Käfers ist eine Art Warnfarbe, weil giftige Arten nachgeahmt werden. Diese "falsche" Warnfarbe wird auch als Mimikry bezeichnet. Der Bestand dieser Käferart ist gefährdet, deshalb steht er auch auf der Roten Liste Deutschland. Das Bild entstand am Main bei Randersacker, der Käfer sitzt auf einer weißen Blüte der Weißen Lichtnelke (Melandrium album).

Therefore, the beetle is also called "bee wolf". The beetle likes to sit on flowers where it hunts small insects or eats pollen. The body and especially the head are shaggy "hairy". The population of this beetle species is endangered, therefore it is also on the Red List Germany. The picture was taken at the river Main near Randersacker, the beetle is sitting on a white flower of the White Campion (Melandrium album).

Nach vielen Tagen mit Kälte, Regen und starkem Wind war es heute am Vormittag fast sommerlich warm und am Main bei Würzburg waren ganz viele Wanderer und Radfahrer unterwegs. Dieses Photo schoss ich bei Randersacker, wo seit Jahren Fischerboote festmachen und wo ich seit Jahren immer wieder Landschaftsbilder mache. Im Hintergrund berühmte Weinbergslagen von Randersacker (Pfülben und Teufelskeller).

After many days of cold, rain and strong winds, it was almost summery warm today in the morning and there were lots of walkers and cyclists on the cycle path along the Main near Würzburg. I took this photo on the Main near Randersacker, where fishing boats have been moored for years and where I have been taking landscape pictures for years. In the background are the famous vineyards of Randersacker.

Diesen zwar originellen, aber nicht ganz den Sicherheitsbestimmungen entsprechenden Zaun fand ich auf dem Dach eines Altbaus in Fahr, einem fränkischen Dorf am Main. Die bunten Lampen signalisieren, dass hier in luftiger Höhe gefeiert wird, zumindest, wenn es Corona zulässt. HFF an alle IPianer

I found this original but not quite safety-compliant fence on the roof of an old building in Fahr, a Franconian village close to the River Main. The colourful lamps signal that people are celebrating here at lofty heights, at least when Corona allows it. HFF to all Ip-friends

Im Weinberg unterhalb der Festung Marienberg in Würzburg wurde der Schriftzug "LOVE" installiert, vielleicht ein Hinweis, wie unser Umgang miteinander in der momentanen Pandemiezeit gesteuert sein sollte.

Recently, the lettering "LOVE" was installed in the vineyard below the Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg, perhaps an indication of how our behaviour towards each other should be controlled in the current pandemic period.

Ein Blick auf die Saale-Insel bei Gemünden, die im Sommer als Campingplatz genutzt wird. Nach dieser Insel vereinigen sch die beiden Flussteile wieder und fließen gemeinsam bei Gemünden in den Main. Im Hintergrund sind die Berge des Spessarts zu sehen.
