A magical place deep inside the glacier. This is by no means the source of the glacier stream. Only this waterfall in the accessible area, where cold air penetrates, is frozen. Deep underground, the water continues to gurgle even in winter. It is a little eerie.

Ein magischer Ort tief im Innern des Gletschers. Man ist hier keineswegs an der Quelle des Gletscherbachs. Gefroren ist nur dieser Wasserfall im zugänglichen Bereich, wo Kaltluft eindringt. Tief im Untergrund gurgelt das Wasser auch im Winter weiter. Etwas unheimlich ist das schon.

The adventurous historic stand-up gondola cable car (established in 1960), which leads up to the Toni-Demez hut at 2,685 metres above sea level.

Only 2 people fit in one gondola. The door is locked from the outside!

The other day the topic came up: posed photos vs. unposed photos. That's why I'm showing this (unposed) snapshot! It was taken while I was modelling myself and shows how much fun we had together. (The photo was taken by my wife).

Why ISO 6,400? Working with constant light instead of flash has the advantage that everyone involved can see the illumination of the scene in real time. However, spontaneous movements can quickly lead to blurring. A fast shutter speed is therefore necessary, which in turn requires a higher ISO value. As you can see, however, this is no longer a problem for modern cameras. Because they actively focus on one eye, this worry is also eliminated.

And yes, the light could have been optimised. But then it would no longer be a snapshot.

Neulich kam das Thema auf: gestellte Fotos vs. ungestellte Fotos. Deshalb zeige ich mal diesen (ungestellten) Schnappschuss! Er entstand, während ich selbst Model stand, und zeigt, wie viel Spaß wir in der Runde hatten. (Das Foto hat meine Frau gemacht.)

Warum ISO 6.400? Wenn man mit Konstantlicht statt Blitz arbeitet, hat das den Vorteil, dass alle Beteiligten die Ausleuchtung der Szene in Echtzeit sehen können. Allerdings können spontane Bewegungen dabei schnell zu Unschärfe führen. Daher ist eine kurze Verschlusszeit nötig, was wiederum einen höheren ISO-Wert erfordert. Wie man sieht, ist das für moderne Kameras aber kein Problem mehr. Dadurch, dass sie aktiv auf ein Auge fokussieren, ist man damit auch diese Sorge los.

Und ja: Das Licht hätte man optimieren können. Aber dann wär's kein Schnappschuss mehr.

Raise the head slightly compared to the previous position. This makes the triangle of light under the right eye visible again. The eyes also receive more light. Reduce the fill light on the right. Distance of the main light reduced, making the low-key effect stronger.

Den Kopf gegenüber der vorherigen Position leicht angehoben. Das Lichtdreieck unter dem rechten Auge wieder dadurch wieder sichtbar. Die Augen selbst bekommen auch mehr Licht. Aufhelllicht rechts reduziert. Abstand des Hauptlichts verringert, wodurch der Low-Key-Effekt stärker wird.

The head has been turned slightly towards the camera compared to the previous position. The illumination of the eyes is now ideal, whereby the face still appears vivid and striking without appearing unnaturally young. The head is raised slightly higher, so that the shadow of the nose is shorter and the chin is larger compared to the previous image. Looking directly into the lens creates an emotional connection with the viewer. In my opinion, this portrait has the potential to be a convincing mural.

Der Kopf wurde im Vergleich zur vorherigen Position minimal zur Kamera gedreht. Die Ausleuchtung der Augen ist jetzt ideal, wobei das Gesicht immer noch plastisch und markant wirkt, ohne unnatürlich jung zu erscheinen. Der Kopf ist etwas höher gehoben, so dass der Nasenschatten kürzer und das Kinn gegenüber dem vorherigen Bild größer wird. Der direkte Blick ins Objektiv schafft eine emotionale Verbindung zum Betrachter. Dieses Porträt hätte meiner Meinung nach das Potenzial, als Wandbild zu überzeugen.

By tilting the head slightly, the Rembrand triangle of light under the right eye reappears. The shadows under the bags under the eyes and along the labial folds appear age-appropriate and authentic. Overall, the face gains in plasticity and striking radiance. The overall impression reflects the image of a friendly older gentleman in his seventies. The direct eye contact and the inviting smile emphasise this effect.

Der Gesamteindruck spiegelt das Bild eines freundlichen älteren Herrn in den Siebzigern wider. Der direkte Blickkontakt und das einladende Lächeln unterstreichen diese Wirkung.

Turning the head towards the camera: This creates direct eye contact with the viewer. However, the eyes are more strongly shadowed by the drooping eyelids, making them more prominent and the eyes appear less vivid. In addition, the right side of the face becomes darker, the characteristic triangle of light under the right eye disappears and the face loses its plasticity.

Kopfdrehung zur Kamera: Dies schafft einen direkten Blickkontakt mit dem Betrachter. Allerdings werden die Augen stärker von den Schlupflidern abgeschattet, wodurch diese markanter hervortreten und die Augen weniger lebendig wirken. Zudem wird die rechte Gesichtshälfte dunkler, das charakteristische Lichtdreieck unter dem rechten Auge verschwindet, und das Gesicht verliert an Plastizität.

Portrait with main light from the top left and fill light from the front right. The prominent labial folds and bags under the eyes of the over-seventy-year-old are visually reduced. This makes the face appear smoother and younger - but also less prominent. I would rather use this classic lighting for business portraits where a dynamic, professional impression is required.

Porträt mit Hauptlicht von links oben und Aufhelllicht von rechts vorne. Die markanten Labialfalten und die Tränensäcke des über Siebzigjährigen werden optisch reduziert. Das Gesicht wirkt dadurch glatter und jünger - aber auch weniger markant. Diese klassische Beleuchtung würde ich eher für Business-Porträts anwenden, bei denen ein dynamischer, professioneller Eindruck gefragt ist.
