Illusions - HFF

Last week I popped round to some friends’ house to water the flowers whilst they’re on holiday. Once I got there, I realised I’d never really taken a close look at their trompe-l’œil painting that takes the place of a window. So, here it is. And I’m going to do the same - go on holiday again. September is a perfect time: most of the tourists have gone, school’s back in session, and there are lovely sunny days with pleasant warmth. See you towards the end of September.

ILLUSIONS... La semaine dernière je suis passée chez des amis pour arroser les fleurs pendant qu'ils sont en vacances. Une fois sur place, je me suis rendue compte que je n'avais jamais vraiment regardé de près leur trompe-l'œil qui remplace une fenêtre. Alors, le voilà. Et moi, je vais faire pareil - repartir en vacances. Septembre est le moment idéal, la plupart des touristes sont partis, l'école a recommencé, il y a de belles journées ensoleillées à la chaleur agréable. Au revoir vers la fin septembre.

ILLUSIONEN... Letzte Woche habe ich bei Freunden vorbeigeschaut, um die Blumen zu giessen, während sie im Urlaub sind. Als ich dort war, merkte ich, dass ich mir ihr Trompe-l’œil anstelle eines Fensters noch nie richtig angesehen hatte. Hier ist es also. Und ich werde dasselbe tun – wieder in den Urlaub fahren. Der September ist die ideale Zeit dafür: die meisten Touristen sind abgereist, die Schule hat wieder begonnen, und es gibt schöne Sonnentage mit angenehmer Wärme. Bis Ende September.

The St Michael chapel and the hermitage, the ruins of which are still visible at the foot of the chapel, were built in 1402 and hosted pilgrims on their way to Mont-Saint-Michel. It was built on the Montaigu, a peak of just under 300 m, but with an exceptional 360° panoramic view.

LA CHAPELLE SUR LA COLLINE. Construite en 1402 tout comme l'ermitage dont les ruines sont encore visibles au pied de la chapelle, la chapelle St. Michel accueillait les pèlerins en route vers le Mont-Saint-Michel. Elle est bâtie sur le Montaigu, un sommet d'un peu moins de 300 m, mais avec une vue panoramique exceptionnelle à 360°.

DIE KAPELLE AUF DEM BERG. Die Kapelle des Hl. Michael und die Einsiedelei, deren Ruinen am Fusse der Kapelle noch sichtbar sind, wurde im Jahre 1402 erbaut, sie beherbergte die Pilger auf ihrem Weg zum Mont-Saint-Michel. Sie wurde auf dem Montaigu erbaut, einem Gipfel von nur knapp 300 m, aber mit einem aussergewöhnlichen 360°-Panoramablick.

I hope this month will be as beautiful as the sunset on that first evening. It is a 40-km trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It used to be a railway line linking Mayenne to Javron.

BIENVENUE AU MOIS DE SEPTEMBRE. J'espère que ce mois-ci sera aussi beau que le coucher de soleil de ce premier soir. C'est un sentier de 40 km destiné aux piétons, aux cyclistes et aux cavaliers. Il s'agissait autrefois d'une ligne ferroviaire reliant Mayenne à Javron.

WILLKOMMEN IM SEPTEMBER. Ich hoffe, dieser Monat wird genauso schön wie der Sonnenuntergang am ersten Abend. Es ist ein 40 km langer Weg für Fussgänger, Radfahrer und Reiter. Früher war dies eine Eisenbahnstrecke, die Mayenne mit Javron verband.

Notre-Dame d’Avesnières was built in the 11th and 12th centuries in the Romanesque style. In the 19th century, it was elevated to the status of a basilica, and a bell tower combining Gothic and Renaissance styles was added to top the roof. It houses a rich collection of statues. I was impressed by the 3.50-metre-tall statue of Saint Christopher (16th century, on the right in the collage).

BANC DOUBLE DANS LA COUR DE L'EGLISE. Notre-Dame d’Avesnières a été construite aux XIe et XIIe siècles, dans un style roman. Au XIX siècle elle est élevée au rang de basilique, et un clocher mêlant les styles gothique et Renaissance vient compléter le toit. Elle renferme un riche ensemble de statues. J'étais impressionnée par Saint Christophe (XVIe) avec ses 3,50 m de haut (à droite dans le collage).

DOPPELBANK AUF DEM KIRCHHOF. Notre-Dame d’Avesnières wurde im 11. und 12. Jh. im romanischen Stil erbaut. Im 19. Jh. wurde sie zur Basilika erhoben, und ein Glockenturm, der Elemente des gotischen und des Renaissance-Stils vereint, vervollständigt das Dach. Sie enthält eine reichhaltige Sammlung von Statuen. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich der 3,50 m hohe Heilige Christophorus aus dem 16. Jh. (rechts in der Collage).

It is situated on the banks of the Erve, near the idyllic spot by the water’s edge. There are actually two wash houses, one on each bank.

LE BANC DU VIEUX LAVOIR se trouve au bord de l'Erve, près du coin idyllique au bord de l'eau. En fait, il y a deux lavoirs, un à chaque rive.

DIE BANK AM ALTEN WASCHHAUS steht am Ufer der Erve, in der Nähe der idyllischen Stelle am Wasser. Es gibt dort zwei Waschhäuser, eines an jedem Ufer.

Bailly Castle dates back to the 15th century. It was built around 1470 for René de la Chapelle, surrounded by a moat, gardens and defensive towers. It was subsequently altered around 1660 and finally partially rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.

DER ZAUN IN DER MAUER. Die Ursprünge des Schlosses von Bailly reichen bis ins 15. Jh. zurück. Es wurde um 1470 für René de la Chapelle erbaut und war von einem Wassergraben, Gärten und Wehrtürmen umgeben. Später, um 1660, wurde es umgebaut und schliesslich im 19. Jh. teilweise im neugotischen Stil wieder aufgebaut.

LA MAISON DE L'ARTISTE. Cette maison est devenue un musée "habité", sa visite permet d’accéder à des espaces où s’entrelacent objets du quotidien, souvenirs de voyage et œuvres inachevées. Chaque surface porte la marque du créateur, et on constate que Tatin a aboli la frontière traditionnelle entre habitat et œuvre d’art, entre vie et création. Il a transformé une propriété rurale en véritable œuvre d’art habitable.

DAS HAUS DES KÜNSTLERS. Dieses Haus ist zu einem "bewohnten" Museum”. geworden, bei einem Rundgang durch das Haus gelangt man in Räume, in denen Alltagsgegenstände, Reiseerinnerungen und unvollendete Werke miteinander verschmelzen. Jede Oberfläche trägt die Handschrift des Künstlers, und man erkennt, dass Tatin die traditionelle Grenze zwischen Wohnraum und Kunstwerk, zwischen Leben und Schöpfung aufgehoben hat. Er hat ein ländliches Anwesen in ein wahres bewohnbares Kunstwerk verwandelt.

C'est le gardien bienveillant du musée, une entrée symbolique dans l’univers de l’artiste. Au fond de sa gueule grande ouverte on retrouve une statue de la Vierge. Sous une de ses pattes, il y a un monticule blanc et sous l’autre, un noir. C’est le bien et le mal. Au-dessus de sa tête, se tiennent un homme et une femme; l’image de la paix et de la vie pour Robert Tatin. Et enfin, la vierge au cœur de la bête représente la neutralité !

THE DRAGON STICKING OUT ITS TONGUE... It is the museum’s benevolent guardian, a symbolic gateway into the artist’s world. Deep inside its wide-open mouth is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Beneath one of its paws is a white mound and beneath the other, a black one. This means to represent good and evil. Above its head stand a man and a woman; for Robert Tatin, they symbolise peace and life. And finally, the Virgin inside the beast symbolises neutrality!

DER DRACHE, DER DIE ZUNGE HERAUSSTRECKT... Er ist der wohlwollende Wächter des Museums, ein symbolischer Eingang in das Universum des Künstlers. Tief in seinem weit aufgerissenen Maul befindet sich eine Statue der Hl. Jungfrau. Unter einem seiner Pfoten liegt ein weißer Haufen, unter dem anderen ein schwarzer. Das soll das Gute und das Böse darstellen. Über seinem Kopf stehen ein Mann und eine Frau; für Robert Tatin das Bild des Friedens und des Lebens. Und schliesslich steht die Jungfrau im Inneren des Ungeheuers für Neutralität !

This is the first area created by the artist, leading to the “strange museum”. There are 19 imposing statues, most of which depict historical figures. Here, Vercingetorix stands alongside Joan of Arc, whilst the artists’ section features Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Rodin and many others.

Ni l'un ni l'autre : c'est le musée d'un artiste français (Robert Tatin) connu pour ses sculptures mythiques uniques, bas-reliefs et jardins, un endroit vraiment atypique. À l'origine du site se trouve sa maison ancienne, et au fil des ans, il construit un domaine décoré de grandes sculptures en ciment coloré, en s'inspirant notamment de ses voyages et des courants artistiques du passé. In the background, you can see the lock and the mill. The PiP collage shows the river mooring on the banks of the Mayenne river (a small harbour for 26 pleasure boats).

SOUS LE PONT DE RHINGEARD. En arrière-plan, on aperçoit l'écluse et le moulin. Le collage en PiP montre l'amarrage fluvial sur les rives de la Mayenne (un petit port pouvant accueillir 26 bateaux de plaisance).

UNTER DER BRÜCKE VON RHINGEARD. Im Hintergrund sieht man die Schleuse und die Mühle. Die PiP-Collage zeigt die Anlegestelle am Ufer des Flusses Mayenne (ein kleiner Hafen für 26 Freizeitboote).

se dresse cette statue de la Vierge. Pour en arriver là, ça n’a pas été simple : en 1913, les hommes ont dû se remonter les manches et tiré fort pour hisser la statue de la Vierge Marie, lourde de 630 kg, en haut d’un chemin raide et escarpé. Depuis, elle n’en a pas bougé. Sur le 1er PiP on se rend bien compte comment elle domine le village, avec une vue magnifique.

RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE ROCK stands this statue of the Virgin Mary. Getting it there was no easy feat: in 1913, the men had to roll up their sleeves and pull with all their might to hoist the 630-kilogram statue of the Virgin Mary up a steep and rugged path. It hasn’t moved since. In the 1st PiP, you can really see how she overlooks the village, with a magnificent view.

GANZ OBEN AUF DEM FELSEN steht diese Marienstatue. Es war kein leichtes Unterfangen, sie dorthin zu bringen: Im Jahr 1913 mussten starke Männer sich die Ärmel hochkrempeln und kräftig ziehen, um die 630 kg schwere Marienstatue einen steilen und beschwerlichen Weg hinaufzuziehen. Seitdem hat sie sich nicht mehr von der Stelle gerührt. Auf dem 1. PiP wird deutlich, wie sie das Dorf überragt, mit einem herrlichen Ausblick.
