Just in time before the end of the flowering season, I managed to take a photograph of the martagon lily (Lilium martagon). Alongside the beautiful flower, you can see one that has already wilted (on the left) and fruit clusters forming at the top. The photograph was taken in a mixed deciduous forest in Franconia.
The martagon lily is not considered endangered in Germany, but is specially protected under the Federal Species Protection Ordinance. Like all members of the lily family, the martagon lily is highly toxic, particularly to cats.

Over the last few years, I have often visited a nearby pond where the grass snake (Natrix natrix) is said to live, but without success. Yesterday, in warm, sunny weather, I was able to spot a large adult (see photo and PiP) and several juveniles during the afternoon. What an experience. According to the current German Red List, the grass snake is classified as an endangered species and is strictly protected under the Federal Species Protection Act.

The wall brown (Lasiommata megera) is a medium-sized eye butterfly from the family of Nymphalidae. It is often found on warm forest paths or on grassy embankments. It is quite common. Its caterpillars feed on various types of grass.
The butterfly in the picture has settled on a plant on which a unknown caterpillar has already eaten a large part of the leaves.

To be more precise, my name is Short-toed treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla). I am a very small songbird that can occasionally be found in deciduous forests, parks and orchards. I spiral around a tree trunk, always looking for food in the bark (spiders and insects). Unfortunately, I can only run from the bottom to the top, just like the woodpeckers. Only the nuthatches can walk in both directions on a tree trunk.
Apart from their behaviour, treecreepers can be recognised by their small body with inconspicuous plumage and a rather long, downward-curved beak. The treecreeper in the picture is sitting on a branch stump and watching the photographer (approx. 20 metres away).

Wikipedia-Artikel).
Die Aufnahme entstand in einem fränkischen Eichen-Mischwald.
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austern-Seitling
The cold season is the trigger for the Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) to form fruiting bodies. By cultivating the mushroom, it has been possible to remove the need for the cold stimulus, so that oyster mushrooms are available in mushroom farms all year round.
A special feature of oyster mushrooms is that their mushroom hyphae can digest nematodes (see Wikipedia article).
Of course, the photo does not show a coral in the conventional sense, but an inedible mushroom, the crown coral (Artomyces pyxidatus). This strange species of fungus, about 5 cm tall, looks like a coral and is found in deciduous forests (beech, oak), where it lives directly on the wood or bark mulch. It is scattered in Franconia. It was a first find for me.

www.dacos-libellen.de/koerperbau-einer-libelle/komplexaugen
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plattbauch
At a pond in an oak forest I found this male broad-bodied chaser (Libellula depressa) sitting on a reed leaf waiting for prey. On cautious approach it immediately flew up. Even with repeated careful creeping up, I could never get very close to the dragonfly. I saw the reason when I looked through the photos: The dragonfly can turn its head completely, so that it has long been in focus a person approaching!
In the photo you can see the head turned 90 degrees, both compound eyes looking to the left towards the photographer (see note). What a world of wonder!
Just by the way: The abdomen of male broad-bodied chasers is blue, that of females yellow-brown.

In January 2023, the "Hour of Winter Birds" was carried out nationwide by a well-known German nature conservation organization: Nature lovers were asked to count and report birds at the bird feeder, in the garden, on the balcony or in the park. The result was that one of our most common finches, namely the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), was seen relatively seldom this year. My impression after this winter is that the chaffinch has become rare for reasons that are still unknown. Let's hope this isn't a long-lasting trend!
Note: The Chaffinch can easily be confused with the Brambling (see PiP).
The picture was taken in a light, sun-drenched mixed deciduous forest.

I observed this beautifully fluffed male of a Great Tit (Parus major) at the edge of a forest. You can also see the "black tie" running from the neck to the belly - a distinctive feature of great tits. The males of the great tits have a more pronounced tie and clearly more blue in the head and tie markings than the females.

The blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) have returned from their wintering grounds in Southern Europe or North Africa. Here in middle Europe, reproduction also takes place. Blackcaps colonise deciduous forests and gardens with denser trees.
The photo was taken in a mixed deciduous forest and shows a singing male with a black cap. Females have a brown cap. They are very shy birds.

The serin (Serinus serinus) is the smallest European finch, which nevertheless attracts attention because of its beautiful lemon-yellow plumage and its distinctive song. In the video www1.wdr.de/ mediathek/video-der-girlitz-serinus-serinus-100.html the distinctive song can be heard. It has been known for this trait since ancient times and has been kept as a cage bird ever since. The well-known canary is the Canary Serin (Serinus canaria) or finches bred from it.
The serin can actually only be confused with the yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella).
Unfortunately, you see the serin less and less because it can no longer find suitable habitats.
The picture was taken at the edge of a mixed deciduous forest.

www.biologie-seite.de/Biologie/Gemeiner_Spaltbl%C3%A4ttling
pilzverein-wynental.ch/clubdesk/fileservlet?id=1000335
I have already pointed out the biological importance of this worldwide spread fungus in an earlier publication: Schizophyllum. I would like to add that there are more than 20000 different gender types of this peculiar fungus species!
The fungus not only plays a role in wood decomposition, but also in wood finishing. For the construction of precious violins, wood that has been attacked by the split-leaf fungus plays a special role.
<media:text type="html">
cammino has posted:

I have already pointed out the biological importance of this worldwide spread fungus in an earlier publication: Schizophyllum. I would like to add that there are more than 20000 different gender types of this peculiar fungus species!
The fungus not only plays a role in wood decomposition, but also in wood finishing. For the construction of precious violins, wood that has been attacked by the split-leaf fungus plays a special role.
