Taken from our balloon high above Bagan. The sun is rising over the 12th century Dhammayazika temple casting long shadows.

Seen from above like this it gives a very good idea of the amazing number of pagodas scattered around the Bagan plain.

General Aung San was instrumental in Burma/Myanmar's struggle for independence from British rule but he was assassinated just six months before his goal was realized. He is considered the founder of modern-day Myanmar.

The Bogyoke Aung San Museum was the residence of Aung San and his family just before his assassination in July 1947. His better-known daughter Aung San Suu Kyi grew up here as a child.

This is part of a beautiful circular wooden fence around a shady verandah overlooking the garden.

Fishermen still work on Inle lake & not just posing for the tourists. This chap is demonstrating the one-legged paddle action they adopt to move along leaving their hands free to cast the fishing net. All the while balancing on the end of that boat.

These two ox carts appeared out of the track to the right so we asked them to stop for a few minutes while Burma Railways metre gauge class YD 2-8-2 967 did its runpast. They were posed but not planned!

Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the largest such structures in the world. The base of the stupa is made of bricks covered with gold plates. The crown is tipped with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies. The very top at 99m high —the diamond bud—is tipped with a 76 carat (15 g) diamond.

It may look like a dug-out canoe high and dry in a field but these fields are actually floating on Inle Lake and the boat, like ours, is making its way along a narrow waterway. The fields are anchored into the bottom of the shallow lake by those hundreds of wooden poles.

We had a great time in Burma but little did we realise that it would be the last trip before the covid lockdown. Now we are very pleased to have actually been able to take a holiday in 2020.

Let's hope the recent military coup doesn't lead to any deaths and can be resolved quickly.

Yokesone Monastry is the oldest surviving wooden monastery hall built on 154 break posts with beautiful wood carvings decorating the outer walls.

Plus of course this carved wooden fence - HHF and have a great weekend!
