Tortured Metal and Broken Beauty (PiP)

Captured on a late windy afternoon at Birnbeck Pier and Island, Weston Super Mare.

The PiP shows the twisted metal of the pier in close up, with the Welsh coast visible across the Bristol Channel in the background. The end of the pier in the PiP was where pleasure boats such as the steam boat, the Waverley' used to arrive and depart from. I can still remember taking a trip from there as a child.

Opening in 1867 the pier was popular with locals and tourists alike who have enjoyed funfairs and amusements and later on a beer cellar and theatre, and as you can see from the picture the lifeboat station was later housed here.

Now at last after many years of promises as broken as the structures here, the money has been found to restore this wonderful old pier and contractors have been appointed. I look forward to seeing the pier finally restored to it's former glory

Bell Tower

Captured at Port Logan, looking across to the pier and old lighthouse/bell tower. The three stage circular lighthouse tower with open light chamber to the third stage was built in 1818 and has been designated as a category B listed building. According to the Visit Scotland site the tower was designed by Thomas Telford.

Port Logan is a pretty village and was the location for the BBC series ' '2000 Acres of Sky,' and was used as a location in the film 'Keepers' starring Gerard Butler

All that aside it is just a pleasant place to sit and take in the view.

The closed off entrance to Birnbeck Pier captured in early evening light at Weston super Mare. You can just see the end of the dilapidated Birnbeck Pier on the far left behind the fence, and the Pip shows it in full. Hopefully when the pier is finally renovated this will be a more pleasant place to sit and enjoy the sea air.
