The room was a gift of Andrew Mellon. It is a piece of true Gothic architecture; no steel supports were used in the construction of its arches. Each arch is a true arch, and they support their own weight. Each base for the arches weighs five tons, and it is said that they are so firmly placed that each could hold a large truck. The large central piers act only as screens for the structural steel that holds up the upper floors of the building. Despite its heavy use, the Commons Room is kept quiet by the use of Guastavino acoustical tiles as the stones between the ribs of vaulting.

Shortly after this, during the height of the cold war in September 1959, the Schenley Hall ballroom in the Union was the site of a luncheon for Nikita Khrushchev, chairman of the Soviet Union, and various Soviet and U.S. officials, including Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. Pittsburgh was Khrushchev's last stop in his eleven-day transcontinental tour prior to a three-day conference with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The New York Times proclaimed: "Pittsburgh Stop Warmest of Tour."

The walls and ceiling of the Yugoslav room are of Slavonian oak handcarved with Slavonic hearts and other traditional motifs. The young oak tree must force its way through dense volcanic soil and develops a fine grain, especially good for notch carving. All of this work was done in Yugoslavia using small pocket knives.

On the wall opposite the windows is a panel depicting the coat of arms of pre-war Yugoslavia: a double-headed eagle symbolizing the Western Empire of Rome and the Eastern Byzantine Empire which influence this country. The state universities of Belgrade, Llubljana and Zagreb with their founding dates are carved beneath it.

Heinz Company, had it built in honour of his mother. Ground was broken for the chapel in 1933, the cornerstone was laid in 1934, and the building was dedicated in 1938.

Charles Zeller Klauder of Philadelphia designed the building in a neo-Gothic style. The chapel’s modified cruciform plan, stone vaults, high ceilings, repeated arches, and extensive use of glass are typical of American academic and religious architecture from about 1900 until after World War II.

Various religious services are held in the chapel, but it does not belong to any denomination. From its beginnings, the chapel was intended to be interdenominational. The chapel is open daily throughout the year except for University holidays, and hosts approximately 1,000 events annually. More than 100,000 people participate in religious services, weddings, concerts, classes, memorial services, and guided tours. Many simply seek its peace and beauty as a refuge.
