The Silver Dragon Cafe is the first thing you see when you enter Côte St. Paul. The neon sign has not worked for years. One blogger states that the food there actually is pretty good, and reasonably priced. "Strange little guy at the cash," he writes "and it is straight out of 1947, with toothless tattooed patrons at other tables...but if you can get past that, the egg rolls, chicken soo guy, fried race, coke … all for about $7… couldn’t beat it." (On the other hand, another blogger complains that the kitchen is filthy). A third blogger praises the "old-fashioned egg rolls. . .a hard to find treat" (but this review dates from 2005). At any rate, the restaurant is now for sale and the wonderful sign may soon be a thing of the past.

Built in 1927 and designed by Joseph-Alcide Chaussé, with interiors by Emmanuel Briffa, it was, and remains, the only theatre in Canada designed in the Egyptian style (inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb). Opened as the Empress Theatre, the building was a Vaudeville theatre for burlesque and first-run films. In 1962 it was a dinner theatre called the Royal Follies. In 1968 it was divided into two floors to became the two-tiered Cinema V-Salle Hermes, an art-movie cinema. In 1974 it was briefly named The Home of the Blue Movies, gaining notability as the Montreal home of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 1975 it then became Cinema V, a repertory cinema. In 1988 it was taken over by the Famous Players chain and showed first-run films. In 1992 a fire caused damage to the theater resulting in its permanent closure.

Since its closure 20 years ago, the building has fallen into a state of disrepair and is slowly deteriorating. In 2005 community organizers re-opened a small one room office on the ground floor (left corner of building; location of the former Sesame health food store) mainly as a headquarters for coordinating the building’s restoration. The office was vacated in late December 2011 due to seizure by the city of Montreal, leaving the entire property abandoned. Most of building is fenced off due to falling debris

Le Journal de Montréal is a daily tabloid newspaper. It is the largest-circulation French-language newspaper in North America; it is also Canada’s largest tabloid. It is famous for its sensationalism and populist Québec-nationalist perspective. On any given day, it can be counted to provide lurid coverage of the weather, crime and Montreal Canadien’s hockey. The front page of the issue of March 8 furnished a splendid example: The trial of two "crapules" (= scumbags); four pages on a late-winter blizzard ("tough on the morale - and it's not over"); and a game against the hated Boston Bruins ("the Habs want their revenge!")

On January 24, 2009, the management of the Journal locked out its unionized staff. For the past two years, the newspaper has continued to publish with the use of strikebreakers, managers, and wire services. So much for populism!
