The river is at a very low point and has been for some time now. Luckily the low level seems to be stable, and is kept that way by tributaries from North Wales.

SC202 - Post 21 June - It's a crazy world. It's hard to believe that this sculpture is what the world has become.

National Youth Anti-Violence Educational Programme.

The Knife Angel was intended to educate children, young people and adults about the harmful effects that violent behaviour has on communities all across our nation. it has been made from hundreds of thousands of knives being removed off our city streets.

The journey of the Knife Angel has travelled across the country, bringing communities together to reflect, remember, and take a stand against violence.

The sculpture was created By the British Ironworks near Oswestry in Shropshire.
In December 2018, the Knife Angel began its official Anti-Violence Tour across the UK, beginning its journey outside of Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral.

So far this year it has been to:

March 2026 Plymouth
April - May 2026 Newark, Nottinghamshire
June 2026 Ely, Cambridgeshire
June & July 2026 Shrewsbury, which is where it is at the moment, and stands proudly in the Market Square

Salisbury Cathedral Altar

On Sunday 14 January 2024, after more than 10 years of planning, selecting and commissioning designs, Salisbury Cathedral formally unveiled two new altars.

Design competition entries were invited in August 2018, and it was won by Luke Hughes. The altars are a unique collaboration between sculptor William Pye and furniture maker Luke Hughes.

Darkened glass surface on each altar also echoes both vaulting above and stained glass, so that this lofty space and the altars become one. The effect is magical. This is the smaller of the two altars, and is placed in the Trinity Chapel. The larger one is octagonal and has a steady stream of water flowing acrpss the top. Very beautiful, but the reflections are blurred.

Duck and ducklings at Ellesmere

This must be a second clutch, as many of the ducklings hatched this year are almost fully grown.

The first Pip is taken by the same lake as the ducklings. A wide assortment of birds collect when visitors feed them on special bird food.

The second Pip is of 2 mating green veined whites, I think, taken on Saturday afternoon in our garden. I noticed what I thought was a clumsy butterfly flitting around, and when 'it' settled, this was the result.

The river Severn has now totally burst its banks in the town, this pavement and the road to the side are underwater and the road is now closed to traffic, and many properties will be pumping out water. Many other roads are also closed in town. It looks beautiful but there is a lot of damage and despair. Three of the town's car parks are closed, and buses have been rerouted. The cricket ground is flooded as are bowling greens and tennis courts. The floods are almost as bad as the record water levels of 2000.

We live 8 miles from Shrewsbury, and although there is a small river running through our village, things would have to get a lot worse for flooding to affect us. There was a critical period for us mid-week when heavy rains brought mud and debris down from fields onto the road and the drains became blocked with leaves etc., but It's just a matter of getting outside and unblocking drain openings - getting soaked in the process. Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire seem to be suffering a lot more than Shropshire this time. .
