Another footplate shot from BR Blue-liveried Great Western Railway King 4-6-0 6023 King Edward II. We are stationary at Rothley Up platform signal waiting for the Class 37-hauled train to clear the section from Leicester North before proceeding.

The Christmas spirit goes on at the Great Central. We were rostered on British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 for two afternoon trips, the second one being after dark.

Not many people around on the platform at Rothley - they were all being serviced by Santa on the train - but as the other train was still on the single line near Leicester we waited here for quite a while. A chance to grab a shot then.

Down the branch.

We are on Hunslet 0-6-0ST Austerity 18 as the shuttle is drawn back to Rothley from the terminus at Mountsorrel by Class 20 diesel D8001. Not a lot of work for me on this leg!

Beyond the bridge & buffer stops is Mountsorrel roadstone quarry.

Rothley station in the sun . No public services are running & it looks deserted but the signal box is manned and the line in private use because the Revolution Very Light Rail (RVLR) demonstrator (just glimpsed right of the signal box) is on test this week.

Great Western Railway pannier tank 0-6-0PT 7714 with Chris at the controls sets off from Rothley on the 16.45 ex-Loughborough. I'm not sure what the car on the right is but it's a real classic.

Pete looks out for the guard to indicate that the coaches have cleared the end of Rothley's Down platform after which he will open BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 92214's regulator to climb the short 1 in 176 gradient.

It looks like that bloke in the first coach is videoing it all on his mobile phone!

With Dave on the regulator, Great Central 9K/LNER O4 2-8-0 63601 drops down the 1 in 176 into Rothley station with a goods train during the January 2007 Gala.

Withdrawn from service in its 100th year in June 2012 63601 is currently being overhauled at Loughborough.

Great Western Railway Manor Class 4-6-0 7802 Bradley Manor climbs away Rothley's Section signal with the 11.20 from Loughborough. At this point the engine is on the 1 in 176 gradient.

7802 was visiting the GCR for the Winter Gala in January but stayed on for a while before returning to its home base at Bridgnorth.

A quick lunchtime visit to Rothley station. British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156, light engine, on a Driver Experience trip, is heading north, gently blowing off. Unnoticed by the platform staff.

You can't beat a steam railway on a cold, misty winter's evening for atmosphere and Rothley station is full of it.

With the gas lights flickering, the signal lamps glowing and GWR 2-8-0T 4247 arriving and departing the ambiance is perfect.

(I'm not sure why the thumbnail is out of focus because the video itself is fine!!)

British Railways Standard 9F 2-10-0 92214 prepares to depart from Rothley station today. I had just collected the single line staff for Leicester North.

We had two gentlemen from Hamburg with us who had travelled from Germany to Loughborough just to drive the loco. They enjoyed themselves, of course.

On the first day of the GCR Winter Gala BR Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 had just arrived at Rothley Brook with the 15.45 vans from Loughborough. The shunter was uncoupling and I went in the tender to pull coal down & took the chance to grab this shot.

No mistaking where this was taken...

British Railways Standard 9F 2-10-0 92214 arrives in Rothley station heading for Leicester. The station is preserved in early 20th century condition complete with gas lamps.

On its way from Lancaster to Seascale the Class 101 diesel multiple unit pauses by the signal box at Rothley!

During the Railways at Work Gala the dmu ran a shuttle between Loughborough & Rothley. Here it was waiting to return north at 10.16 having just reversed at Rothley Brook.

On a grey rainy Boxing Day late afternoon Fowler 3F 0-6-0T 47406 storms away from Rothley with the 15.30 from Loughborough. In fact this really was the lull before the Covid storm which is still raging of course!

The Jinty had a 6 month extension to its boiler ticket but sadly it passed the last part out of steam due to the pandemic closure.
