I was out with a couple of friends doing a repeat bio-assessment of an acreage south of the city. I thought I might have overdone my mushroom hunting after a fourth drive southwest of the city yesterday. Felt I needed a break and a "new" subject to photograph for a short while. However, it was back in full force today when I saw this brilliantly coloured fungus. I had wondered if maybe this was a nest area and I discovered today that I was right! While I photographed this Mom, a tiny white head would pop up every once in a while : ). Taller people were able to see two owlets behind the ledge. I am surprised that a Great Gray Owl would nest at the Zoo, especially as the aviary is a walk-through one, with nothing between Zoo visitors and the birds. This nest isn't many feet from the path, but there are trees in front of it, with a gap. Quite a feeling to stand there and look into these small eyes! A couple told me that they had been in there two days ago and the babies had not yet hatched. This photo was taken last weekend, during a visit south of Calgary to the wonderful homestead near Nanton, belonging to Jim Coutts. He is gradually returning his land to it's original prairie grassland, but he has stunning gardens surrounding his home. I even chickened out of a three-hour walk this morning, which is unusual for me. Did call in at a local park a bit later in the hope of getting a few Chickadee shots, but I suspect they will all be too noisy (i.e. from low light, not from little chirping voices) and will end up being deleted.
