This week's Saturday Self-Challenge: Flowers!
The garden is full of flowers at the moment, so it was difficult to make a decision about which ones to choose. I opted to go for a walk instead to see what was available in the way of wild flowers, and here are just some of them.

Pussy Willow in Spring

PiPs: Dandelion, Daisy, Red dead nettle, Wood anemone, Wood anemone underside of petals.

I couldn't decide which song to choose, so your challenge is to guess which songs the photos relate to.

The missing guess is : The Beatles - Ticket To Ride The Shropshire council card is my senior citizen's free bus pass.

The others are: The Beatles — Please Mr. Postman

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby

The Beatles -The Long And Winding Road

The Beatles - Paperback Writer

The Beatles - Maxwell's Silver Hammer

I have thoroughly enjoyed this challenge - listening to the music and remembering what it was like to be young. ;-))

This little polished aluminum boat just get a slight dust with a soft cloth to keep it smooth.
The reflected colours come from kitchen tiles. a pottery storage jar, my jacket and a pair of yellow washing up gloves.

Aerial roots are roots above the ground. They are almost always adventitious. They are found in diverse plant species, including epiphytes such as orchids. In the wild these adventitious roots absorb rainwater for moisture and use nutrients from decaying insects or leaves for fertilizer.

I have had this orchid for nine years and pay it scant attention except when it is flower. It flowered from November last year to March of this year and seems to thrive on neglect. It only seems to flower every two years.

This photo shows an example of static electricity. The plastic pen was rubbed against my hair to charge it, and then it was able to pick up pieces of tissue paper. The charged pen could also bend water, but I couldn't get a good photo of that.

Static electricity can be a big problem of course. It can build up in clouds. This can cause a huge spark to form between the ground and the cloud. This causes lightning – a flow of charge through the atmosphere. It is dangerous when there are flammable gases or a high concentration of oxygen. A spark could ignite the gases and cause an explosion. And of course one can get an electrostatic shock if one is electrically 'charged' and touches something that is earthed. Occasionally I get a shock when I touch a car door handle, and it has been known for a computer to freeze when I walk near it.

It is not all bad though. Factories use static electricity to reduce pollution coming from their smoke stacks. They give the smoke an electric charge. When it passes by electrodes of the opposite charge, most of the smoke particles cling to the electrodes. This keeps the pollution from going out into the atmosphere.

To make this star use 2 strips of paper, fasten 2 ends together at right angles, then fold one over another to make a long strip like a concertina. Then pull the ends of the strip together into a 'circle' and fasten with a small stapler to get the star. I used 2 strips of Christmas wrapping paper each strip being 3 cm. wide.

I have never been keen on any team sport until I was introduced to Petanque which is often called boules in the UK. The landlord (at the time - in the late 80s early 90s) of our local pub constructed 3 pistes in the play area and invited a couple to come over and teach us the rules. A thriving club was started and we had tournaments on summer afternoons and sometimes evenings. It was so friendly and enjoyable. Anyone of any age could take part. and the boules could be plastic ones filled with water or steel ones. We got so interested that we invested in competition boules that are marked with the size and weight. These are mine and are quite small but also heavy. In the late 90s we started visiting France each year and found the perfect gite in a small Provencal town called Peymeinade. The owners had a superb piste in their large garden and we played almost every evening, and also played on the beach in Théoule-sur-Mer.

They invited us to play in competitions in surrounding villages too, and one memorable contest was won by my partner Marcel and me. Only two teams were left in the competition. The score was critical, the opposing team had played their last boule and it was on the coche (jack), Marcel had played his last shot and I, with my last boule, was usually just a pointer (The one who plays the boules as close to the jack as possible). Marcel, standing at the end where the coche and boule were shouted "Shoot", and so I did. It was a magical carreau where the boule knocks out the opposing boule and stayed on the floor like a rock. It was such a surprise for everyone, especially me. ;-)))

Sadly the pistes no longer exist at our local pub, and we haven't been to France for about 14 years. The boules are just waiting ......
