The Fountain Of Life

Located in historic New Harmony, Indiana, this fountain was erected to the memory of Jane Blaffer Owen’s daughter Carol, who died in 1979, at a young age. Carol’s Garden is a memorial garden and it was dedicated in 1982, and the Fountain of Life is the centerpiece of the garden and is open to the public. The garden was designed by Jane Blaffer Owen, Carol’s mother, and the peaceful fountain and its two accompanying benches were made with Indiana limestone by Sculptor David Rogers of Bloomington, Indiana.

For the Saturday Self-Challenge group, whose theme this week was "Artificial Intelligence."

I spent all week researching Artificial Intelligence and trying to figure out how to represent it photographically. The reason I picked a bank as my subject is because they employ AI in many ways. From the ability to accept checks deposited through a cell-phone application; helping to prevent fraud by using AI systems to learn what types of transactions are fraudulent; AI helps with credit decisions in determining the specific risk assessment for individual customers; or even to send customers text message alerts for a low balance, artificial intelligence is working in the background.

I don't have anything in my house that employs AI, and since this picture was taken on film using a camera made in 1916, I think you can figure out my stance on Artificial Intelligence.

This shot of my town's water tower was taken when it was nearly pitch black. But the long 2-minute exposure picked up the glow from the lights of my town behind it and an oil pumping facility just off the right edge of the frame really lit up the water tower itself.

Grand Funk Railroad had a big hit with "We're An American Band." It's always been a favorite song of mine and I've played and sang in it a few bands of my own. This particular record is also one of my favorites because it's transparent vinyl. I read where it was released on dark yellow vinyl to symbolize a "gold" record.

For the Saturday Self-Challenge group, who's theme this week was to "Choose only one thing to photograph against the most basic background." I chose this single item, which is referred to as a "single," against a plain sky background.

When my house was built in 1945, I'm pretty sure it didn't have a bathroom. It probably had an outhouse in the backyard. Some previous owner to the people who owned the house before my parents bought it built on this bathroom just off the kitchen. To facilitate a door for it, a barn-type sliding door was added. It is heavy duty and features a display shelf above it. When closed, it resides hidden beside the refrigerator to the left.

This type of ceiling finish is made by "smooshing" the trowel in the wet plaster and pulling it away. It leaves designs like mountain ranges, as seen from the sky. When I was little, I used to pretend it was the surface of some alien planet. Yes, I had a vivid imagination when I was a kid.
