The fourteen story Plaza Hotel is so close to the entrance of the harbor where large tankers and freighters pass, that it carries maritime collision insurance.

Church of Santa Maria e San Donato in Murano, Italy "is known for its twelfth century Byzantine mosaic pavement and is said to contain the relics of Saint Donatus of Arezzo as well as large bones behind the altar said to be the bones of a dragon slain by the saint."

This photograph was taken from a balcony in a passing cruise ship, which permitted a bird's eye view of the dome.

The Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence, Italy is the largest Franciscan church in the world. It is known for its chapels decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his students as well as its tombs and cenotaphs. Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini are buried there. It was consecrated in 1442 and remodeled over the years.

Galileo was tried by the Inquisition as a result of his writings about heliocentrism. He was forced to recant his views, and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest. Nevertheless, he was buried in Santa Croce.

The Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence, Italy is the largest Franciscan church in the world. It is known for its chapels decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his students as well as its tombs and cenotaphs. Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini are buried there. It was consecrated in 1442 and remodeled over the years. The 19th century facade was designed by Jewish architect, Niccolo Matas and features a Star of David.

The Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere is one of the oldest churches in Rome. A Christian house-church was founded on the site around 220 by Pope Saint Callixtus I. A larger church was built on the site in 340 by Pope Julius I. Major restorations took place in the fifth and the eight centuries. Pope Innocent II razed and re-erected the church in 1140.

Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, Italy was built on the site of an 11th Century chapel. Pope Gregory IX had a church built there in the 13th Century and gave it to the Augustinians. The church was reconstructed between1472-1477. Between1655-60 the facade was modified by Bernini to modernize the church from Renaissance to Baroque style. Works by Raphael, Bernini and Caravaggio can be found in the church.
