For a population of only around 1500 Kingussie has an impressive 1893 vintage stone-built station on the Highland line between Perth and Inverness.

Facilities include a pre-1915 Edwardian post box (notice the ER VII) although whether these days it is regularly emptied I'm not sure and a Victorian water fountain although that looks defunct - the vandals took the handles!.

A classic sea stack on the northeast coast of Caithness. In fact Duncansby Head is the most northeasterly point on the British mainland.

We enjoyed a fabulous Indian Summer up here in September while the rest of the UK was awash with rain.

Beautiful weather in beautiful Caithness.

The cottage is on the mainland but behind is the island of Stroma and lighthouse with the Orkney hills of Hoy in the beyond over Pentlandite Firth. Their apparent proximity is exaggerated by the telephoto lens.

Going back a few years now, On our return journey from Dunfermline to Edinburgh we sat behind the driver in the front compartment and fortunately he hadn't pulled down the blinds so we had a great view.

I took this shot in the middle of the 1.6 mile long Forth Bridge. The combination of the major supports and smaller iron & steelwork struts make an interesting pattern over this iconic engineering structure opened in 1890.

Duncansby Head and lighthouse are at the most northeasterly point on the UK mainland with Duncansby Stacks an easy walk to the south of the lighthouse.

Another view of the coastline in northeast Scotland taken during our recent holiday. The weather was beautiful and from here, the most northerly point on mainland Britain, the Orkney Islands could be clearly seen. You have to squint but on the far left of the island the sea stack known as The Old Man of Hoy is just visible.

A view across the Cromarty Firth from the village of Cromarty on the Black Isle. The North Sea jack-up drilling rig is unidentified but has been stacked here in the Firth waiting for another contract to drill for oil and gas.

An early morning view of the three semi-submersibles and one jack-up drilling rigs stacked in the Cromarty Firth seen from near the ferry in Nigg. The closest is the Noble Endeavor which was built in 1976 so is pretty old and has been here since 9th December 2024.

The sunset seen from Ferry View Pit Stop. While the rest of the UK seems to have had torrential rain up in Northern Scotland the weather was beautiful.

The halo around the house attracted me & it only lasted a few minutes. I don't think the sheep in the shadows were as impressed.

A Scottish rail journey from 18 years ago. I travelled up to Fort William on the Scotrail overnight sleeper from Crewe pulled by EWS Class 67 diesel 67007. Here we are entering the horseshoe curve between Tyndrum & Bridge of Orchy on the West Highland Line. In the centre is the viaduct which we crossed a few minutes later & the other limb of the horseshoe is on the left.

What a fabulous view from your carriage window to wake up to in the morning !

(Best appreciated in large view.)
