Ein herrlicher Blick ins Frankenland - A magnificent view of Franconia

Auf dem Zabelstein (489 m) kommt man über 110 Treppenstufen auf die Plattform des fast 20 m hohen Aussichtsturms (s. PiP 1), der die dort stehenden Laubbäume weit überragt. Von hier hat man bei gutem Wetter einen sehr schönen Blick bis zum fast 30 km (!) entfernten Schwanberg (siehe PiP 2). Er ist 464 m hoch.

On the Zabelstein, at an elevation of 489 m, you can reach the viewing platform of the nearly 20 m high observation tower (see PiP 1) by climbing 110 steps. The tower rises well above the surrounding deciduous trees. From there, you have a beautiful view in good weather, reaching as far as the Schwanberg, almost 30 km away (see PiP 2). It is 464 m high.

Die Laubbäume der Vorberge des Zabelsteins (einer der höchsten Berge des Steigerwalds) erscheinen schon in einem dunklen Grün, es ist nicht mehr so heiß wie in den Wochen vorher und die Obstbäume sind fast alle abgeerntet. Der Herbst kündigt sich an. Das Foto entstand während einer Rundwanderung um den Zabelstein mit Start in Oberschwappach.

The deciduous trees in the foothills of the Zabelstein - one of the highest peaks of the Steigerwald - are already showing a deep shade of green. It is no longer as hot as in the previous weeks, and most of the fruit trees have already been harvested. Autumn is on its way.

Im Landschaftspark um das Schloss Oberschwappach findet sich eine Dreifigurengruppe von Hilde Würtheim mit dem Namen "Frühstück im Park", zwei Männer und eine Frau, allesamt Portraits von lebenden Personen aus dem Umkreis der Künstlerin. Das zweidimensionale Ölgemälde von Édouard Manet mit dem Titel „Frühstück im Grünen“ aus dem Jahr 1863 (siehe PiP) wurde von Hilde Würtheim in die dritte Dimension transferiert. Kaum zu glauben, dass Mönche ein so prachtvolles Schloss für sich errichten ließen - schließlich ist das Gelübde der Armut ein zentraler Bestandteil ihres Ordenslebens. Schloss Oberschwappach entstand 1738 als Sommerresidenz der Äbte des Klosters Ebrach. Heute beherbergt es ein Museum, einen Kindergarten und ein Restaurant. Im prunkvollen Spiegelsaal finden regelmäßig Konzerte und kulturelle Veranstaltungen statt, und der umliegende Schlossgarten lädt zu einem Spaziergang ein.

Hard to believe that monks had such a magnificent castle built for themselves - after all, the vow of poverty is a central part of their monastic life. Oberschwappach Castle was constructed in 1738 as the summer residence of the abbots of Ebrach Abbey. Today, it houses a museum, a kindergarten, and a restaurant. In the splendid Hall of Mirrors, concerts and cultural events are held regularly, and the surrounding castle garden invites visitors to take a stroll.

Vom Treppenhaus im Knauf-Museum in Iphofen hatte ich kürzlich diesen interessanten Blick auf die Pfarrkirche St. Vitus. Zurzeit (bis 9.11.25) wird dort die Sonderausstellung "Kelten in Franken" gezeigt. Der Besuch lohnt sich.

In der Schweinfurter Kunsthalle findet zurzeit eine Ausstellung mit dem Titel "be-rühren" mit Werken von Rolf Sachs statt. Rolf Sachs ist der Sohn des bekannten deutschen Industrieerben Gunter Sachs, der kurz mit Brigitte Bardot verheiratet war. In Schweinfurt ist die bislang größte Ausstellung der Werke von Rolf Sachs zu sehen.

Diesen schon ziemlich verrotteten Baumstumpf mit vielen "Eingängen" fand ich in einem Eichen-Buchen-Mischwald. Neben Mäusen, Bakterien und Pilzen dürften hier bestimmt viele Larven von Käfern (z.B. Hirschkäfer) und Schmetterlingen (z.B. Holzbohrer, Glasflügler und Faulholzmotten) und Fliegenmaden leben und sich entwickeln. Der verrottende Baumstumpf ist also ein Mini-Ökosystem.

I found this rather rotten tree stump with many "entrances" in a mixed oak-beech forest. In addition to mice, bacteria and fungi, many larvae of beetles (e.g. stag beetles), butterflies (e.g. cossid millers etc) and fly maggots are probably living and developing here. The rotting tree stump is therefore a mini-ecosystem.

Im Bild zu sehen: Der Eichen-Leberreischling (Fistulina hepatica), oft Leberreischling, auch Leberpilz oder Ochsenzunge genannt. Dieser Pilz lebt als Schwächeparasit bevorzugt an Eichen, deren Kernholz befallen wird. Die von der Ochsenzunge befallenen Bäume sind noch lange standsicher. In der Vergangenheit galt der Eichen-Leberreischling im angelsächsischen Sprachraum als poor men’s beefsteak, also Fleisch des armen Mannes, weil er in den Wäldern reichlich gefunden wurde und gebraten als Fleischersatz diente. Er gilt nicht als wertvoller Speisepilz.

The photo shows the beefsteak fungus (Fistulina hepatica). This fungus lives as a weaking parasite preferentially on oaks whose heartwood is infested. The infested trees remain stable for a long time. Fistulina hepatica has been used as a meat substitute in the past, and can still be found in some French markets. It has a sour, slightly acidic taste. For eating, it must be collected young and it may be tough and need to be cooked for a long time.

Der Sommer geht zu Ende, es wird kühler und regnerischer. Also ideale Bedingungen für viele Pilzarten. Im Bild eine kleine Gruppe von jungen Schopftintlingen (Coprinus comatus). In diesem Zustand gelten Schopftintlinge als hervorragende Speisepilze. Ich habe sie allerdings noch nie probiert. Der blauschwarze Saft, den ältere Schopftintlinge abgeben (siehe www.ipernity.com/doc/cammino/52091522), wurde früher als Tinte genutzt.
Der Schopftintling ist Pilz des Jahres 2024!

Summer is coming to an end, it's getting cooler and rainier. Ideal conditions for many types of mushrooms. The photo shows a small group of young shaggy ink caps (Coprinus comatus) . In this state, these mushrooms are considered excellent edible mushrooms. However, I have never tried them. The blue-black juice that older shaggy ink caps give off (see www.ipernity.com/doc/cammino/52091522) was formerly used as ink.
The shaggy ink cap is Fungus of the Year 2024! The photo was taken on the edge of a path in a mixed beech forest.

Zuerst leben viele Bakterienarten vom Totholz, darauf folgen etliche Pilzarten und zuletzt leben etliche Insektenarten vom abgebauten Holz. In etwa 25 Jahren haben die Organismen, die einen toten Laubbaum besiedelten, ihren toten Wirt zu Humus abgebaut. Der Kreislauf des Lebens kann erneut beginnen.

In about 25 years, the organisms that colonised a dead deciduous tree have decomposed their dead host into humus. The cycle of life can begin again.

"Der Künstler orientiert sich an klassischen Meistern wie etwa Michelangelo und fügt seinen Werken zusätzlich gezielte Beschädigungen zu. So stellt die in Bamberg stehende Plastik das überdimensionale Fragment eines jugendlich wirkenden Gesichts dar. Gestern gelang es mir, einen auffälligen gelben Tagfalter, der oft mit dem Zitronenfalter (siehe www.ipernity.com/doc/cammino/51818278) verwechselt wird, zu fotografieren. Es handelt sich um die Goldene Acht (Colias hyale), die zu den Weißlingen gehört und von Europa bis Asien auf Wiesen verbreitet ist. Männchen und Weibchen sind schwer zu unterscheiden. Die Raupe ernährt sich von verschiedenen Schmetterlingsblütlern und überwintert auf ihrer Futterpflanze.

Yesterday I was able to photograph a striking yellow butterfly, which is often confused with the common brimstobe (see Zitronenfalter. It is the pale clouded yellow (Colias hyale), which belongs to the white butterflies and is widespread in meadows from Europe to Asia. Males and females are difficult to distinguish. The caterpillar feeds on various butterfly flowers and overwinters on their forage plant.

Bei einer Wanderung fand ich an einem Waldrand diesen Fruchtstand einer Klette, vollkommen mit Spinnenfäden eingesponnen. Der beginnende Herbst zeigt sich von seiner schönen Seite.

Nach der deutschen Vereinigung in den 1990er Jahren wurde das 14 Hektar große ehemalige Bahngelände des Görlitzer Bahnhofs zu einem Naherholungsgebiet mit ökologischen Schwerpunkten, genannt Görlitzer Park („Görli“), umgebaut. Es erstreckt sich vom Landwehrkanal in Nordwestrichtung bis zur Emmauskirche (siehe PiP). Der Drogenhandel und die Kriminalität nahmen dort im Laufe der Jahre so zu, dass dieser faszinierende Park bis heute Gegenstand politischer Debatten ist.
Eine Steinfigur im Park (Künstler unbekannt) auf dem Foto repräsentiert die Tristess dieses Berliner Freizeitparks.
Görlitzer Park
After German reunification in the 1990s, the 14-hectare former railway area of Görlitz station was transformed into Görlitzer Park ("Görli"), a recreational area with an ecological focus that stretches from the Landwehr Canal in a north-westerly direction to the Emmaus Church (see PiP). Crime and drug dealing escalated there over time to such an extent that this fascinating park remains a recurring political topic to this day.

Bei meinem kürzlichen Berlin-Besuch entdeckte ich dieses beeindruckende Graffito in Berlin-Kreuzberg. "Das riesige Gemälde ist sicherlich eines der am meisten fotografierten Murals in Berlin. Es wurde 2016 von Jadore Tong alias S.Y.R.U.S. (Save Your Rich Intouchable Soul) als privat organisiertes Projekt realisiert. Ganze 4 Wochen hat es gedauert, bis das 750 Quadratmeter große Gemälde fertig war. Es bedeckt die gesamte Rückseite eines typischen Berliner Altbaus mit sechs Etagen. Zuerst wurden mit einer Malerrolle und Sprühdosen die Umrisse gemalt, die dann mit Wandfarbe gefüllt wurden. Am Ende wurden die Details schließlich mit Sprühdosen aufgebracht. During my recent visit to Berlin, I discovered this impressive graffito in Berlin-Kreuzberg. "The huge painting is certainly one of the most photographed murals in Berlin. It was created in 2016 by Jadore Tong alias S.Y.R.U.S. (Save Your Rich Intouchable Soul) as a privately organised project. It took a whole 4 weeks to complete the 750 square metre painting. It covers the entire back of a typical old Berlin building with six floors. First, the outlines were painted with a paint roller and spray cans, which were then filled in with wall paint. Bei einer Wanderung heute am 1. September entdeckte ich die ersten Spinnennetze am Wegrand. Die Veränderungen in der Natur sind nicht zu übersehen. Sie kündigen das Sommerende und die kommenden kühlen, nebligen Herbsttage an.

On a hike today, 1 September, I discovered the first spider webs along the path. The changes in nature cannot be overlooked. They herald the end of summer and the cool, misty autumn days to come.

Ein Blick in den barocken Arkadengang des Juliusspitals Würzburg. Das Juliusspital wurde 1580 durch Fürstbischof Echter von Mespelbrunn eingeweiht und ist das Kernstück einer bedeutenden Stiftung, die bis heute existiert und und wirkt.

Heute Morgen erlebte ich in Würzburg auf der Alten Mainbrücke den ersten nebligen Morgen des neuen Herbstes. Das Rathaus mit seinem hohen Turm und der Kiliansdom (in der Mitte hinten) sind in Nebel eingetaucht. Eine Stunde später schien schon wieder die schönste Herbstsonne.

This morning I experienced the first foggy morning of the new autumn in Würzburg on the Old Main Bridge. The town hall with its high tower and St. Kilian's Cathedral (in the middle at the back) are immersed in fog. An hour later, the most beautiful autumn sun was already shining again.

Die Äcker sind zum größten Teil schon gepflügt, die Laubverfärbung beginnt und die Natur bereitet sich langsam auf die Winterruhe vor. Und dennoch werden uns im Moment Spätsommertage geschenkt, die man genießen sollte.
Im Bild eine einsame kleine Kapelle in der fränkischen Flur, aufgenommen bei Nachmittagssonne.
Ein Würzburger Bürger ließ 1624 an der Stelle, an der er nach geglückter Heimkehr aus Jerusalem zuerst die Festung Marienberg in Würzburg wieder sah, einen Gelöbnis-Bildstock errichten. Dieser wurde 1625, also mitten im Dreißigjährigen Krieg, durch ein kleines Kapellchen ersetzt, das bis heute existiert.

In 1624, a citizen of Würzburg had a votive shrine erected on the spot where he first saw the Marienberg fortress in Würzburg again after his successful return from Jerusalem. This was replaced in 1625, in the middle of the Thirty Years' War, by a small chapel that still exists today.
