The Levels are a vast, low-lying wetland area in Somerset,covering about 650 km² (250 sq mi)
Mostly just 3–8 metres above sea level. The main rivers are the Axe, Brue, Parrett, Tone and their tributaries. Much of the land would naturally flood in winter; it is kept dry by an elaborate network of drains (“rhynes”), pumping stations and raised river banks.
Somerset Levels have a temperate climate, which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of the country. The annual mean temperature is approximately 10 °C (50.0 °F). Seasonal temperature variation is less extreme than most of the United Kingdom because of the adjacent sea. (wikipedia)

Somerset Levels have a temperate climate, which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of the country. The annual mean temperature is approximately 10 °C (50.0 °F). Seasonal temperature variation is less extreme than most of the United Kingdom because of the adjacent sea. (wikipedia)
</media:text>

This man made 10.5-mile (16.9 km) channel of the King's Sedgemoor Drain was completed in 1795,

In mid-2008, an eel-pass was installed at Greylake Sluice, consisting of an open-topped metal channel, fitted with bristles on its base, which allows glass eels returning from the Sargasso Sea to wiggle their way past the sluice. The channel is equipped with an infra-red camera, to allow the movement of eels to be monitored during the night.
Preferable Large!..................HFF!

This man made waterway is only 9.8 miles long, but it takes the water of the River Cary across King's Sedgemoor before it accepts the waters of the Eighteen-Foot Rhyne , Langacre Rhyne, Sowy River and also taking the waters of Chedzoy New Cut Before flowing into the River Parrett and on to Bridgwater Bay.

It has become very important for the water table on this part of the Somerset Levels
