A pommeler was someone who worked in a leather tannery. The term is thought to come from the way the workers pounded or pummeled the hides. Uploaded to complete an old story. When London buses were privatized, some of the new franchisees did not have enough buses to service the routes that they had bid for, so they hired extra vehicles in from anywhere they could. I wonder if the advertisers got compensation for their adverts being far from their potential customers!

The City of London is known as the square mile, as it is in a very compact central London location. It is packed with offices, churches, stations and official buildings. It has for several centuries been unable to house all the workers it needs in its own boundaries. These blocks of flats are across the river Thames, in Southwark. The Shard can be seen in the background.

This was claimed to be the largest hop exchange in the country, selling hops from Hereford in the west of England and Kent in the east and various places in between. Nearby breweries accounted for a large proportion of the capital's beer production. There were still horse-drawn drays delivering the products when I first started work in Southwark in the mid-'60s.

This is an old industrial building now used for offices and studios, I think. It is about five minutes walk from the Shard and just across the Thames from the City of London and it skyscrapers.
