I keep meaning to check the little tag that came with it - but I think it's called Orange Star.<br /> <br /> Spent about three hours this afternoon, driving the backroads south east and south west of the city, to try out a small GPS unit that I bought yesterday - bought in desperation, hoping to give myself a little more confidence despite my driving phobia that I have been battling for more than 30 years. Plus I have next to no sense of direction. The GPS was pretty good - I only got lost briefly once. The thing that complicates things is that some of the backroads have two numbers (street number as well as Range Road number, I think). At least the unit shows me just where I am at any given time, which is a huge concern of mine, LOL! Had to laugh - I had set the voice on British English (I grew up in England), but soon changed it to American English, after the woman with the first accent completely mispronounced one of the city's main roads! And wildlife? WHAT wildlife??? And it was SO windy, I could barely hold my camera.<br /> <br /> Didn't get round to backing up more of my photos on an external drive last night (partly 'cos I had Migraine, which thankfully I rarely get any more), but, if I'm wise, I will try and get some done this evening, as my computer is still making a very strange (and worrying) clicking sound, which seems to be getting worse. Frozen meals are fine when you have a microwave, LOL. All my photos of this little bird of prey were taken in Fish Creek Park and are heavily cropped. It doesn't matter how many times I see one of these huge, almost prehistoric looking birds, I am still filled with awe. The two today kept flying from tree to tree and occasionally to a log. One of the biggest challenges is to try and get a photo with no twigs or blades of grass in the way!! They gave us a chance to shoot in different settings, which was really nice and much appreciated. For those of you who are not familiar with this Woodpecker, this is a female - the male has a red moustache, but not the female. Also, the female's red crest starts on the crown, whereas the male's crest begins at the forehead. It doesn't matter how many times I see one of these huge, almost prehistoric looking birds, I am still filled with awe. The two today kept flying from tree to tree and occasionally to a log. One of the biggest challenges is to try and get a photo with no twigs or blades of grass in the way!! They gave us a chance to shoot in different settings, which was really nice and much appreciated. For those of you who are not familiar with this Woodpecker, this is a female - the male has a red moustache, but not the female. Also, the female's red crest starts on the crown, whereas the male's crest begins at the forehead. Just after I had decided that it was time to leave, I glanced down and saw three of these amazingly beautiful Leafy Spurge Hawk Moth caterpillars on a Leafy Spurge plant!. Actually, two had this colouring and the third had a lot more green on it. I had seen one of this species a couple of years ago, again by pure chance. This is not my favourite shot of it, but it does show what the head end and underneath are like. This is north-west of the city. The word "reserve" is a little misleading - all this really is, is an area of hills and roads with isolated farms and ranches. They are in a separate enclosure from the Hawks and Owls and this enclosure is not open to people. Knowing how powerful that beak is, this is understandable! Usually, these Eagles are right away from the chain link fence and partly hidden by tree branches, but I was a little luckier this day. Occasionally, one will come and bathe in a tiny creek right next to the fence - I've had this happen two or three times and it's quite a feeling to be just a few inches away from one of these magnificent birds. I often see them in the wild, but can only get very distant photos.
