This logo might have been the pride of the country at one point, but these days our rail system is fragmented, and not working properly Billions of pounds have been spent on the HS2 which was meant to connect London (the main concern) to all places north. The length of the new railway has been reduced substantially since it was first announced in 2013. It was originally to split into eastern and western branches north of Birmingham Interchange forming a Y configuration. The most northerly point of the eastern branch of the Y would have been a connection to the East Coast Main Line south of York. There was to be a branch to a terminus in Leeds and a connection to the Midland Main Line. The most northerly point of the western branch of the Y would have been a connection to the West Coast Main Line south of Wigan. There would have been a branch to a terminus in Manchester and a connection to the West Coast Main Line at Crewe. Between November 2021 and October 2023 the project was progressively cut until only the London to Handsacre and Birmingham section remained.

If I wanted to get to London, I'd have to catch a bus. once every 2 hours, to Shrewsbury, find a parking space, and eventually get onto a train to Euston. I have always been able to do this, so no improvement, although apparently it could be 20 minutes quicker .... .

The first PiP is not a logo for fruit, but an old logo for Pears Soap.

The second PiP is clearly the recycling logo, but it's a really useful service offering to recycle sports gear.

Yesterday we visited the Aston Locks Nature Reserve again and saw a pair of swans, 4 coots, an unidentified bird of prey (possibly a kestrel) and a delightful area of what appears to be Cuckoo Flower in one of the ponds. It would have been nice to collect all of this together as a dream photo, but the coots were too far away and the hawk was a blur in the sky. So here is a collage of dreaming.

The bird hide is now open, and a cold spring has arrived.

Equisetum is a "living fossil", the only living genus of the entire subclass Equisetidae. In the early spring, white to tan coloured fertile stems that produce spores, shown here, arise from the soil and grow to about 8-12 inches tall. They are unbranched, leafless and topped by a spore-bearing cone. These die down quickly and are followed by new shoots annually from underground rootstalks. Their hollow, jointed, ridged stems contain silicate and other minerals. The leaves are reduced to sheaths that clasp and encircle the shoots.

Another name for Horsetail is scouring-rush which refers to the rush-like appearance of the plants and to the fact that the stems are coated with abrasive silicates, making them useful for scouring (cleaning) metal items such as cooking pots.

It is sold on Amazon as it’s believed to have multiple medicinal properties and is mostly used to improve skin, hair, and bone health. However, despite centuries of use in traditional medicine, there is no evidence that Equisetum has any medicinal properties.

Equisetum is a pernicious weed, and is difficult to eradicate, due to its deep rooted nature and thick silica structure. . Herbicides give the best levels of control. Gardeners need to be careful with a weed like horsetail as not only does it spread via spores but it only takes a finger sized piece of root horsetail to regrow. It should be remembered that killing horse tail is not a quick fix and regular re-applications of herbicides and repeated ongoing cultural control may be needed.

My advice if you have these weeds in your garden? Move house! ;-)

The word “wabi-sabi” is derived from two Japanese words.
“Wabi” refers to an austere, natural state.
“Sabi” refers to a lonely, melancholic sense of impermanence in life.
So the concept of “wabi-sabi” has slightly sad undertones, but in recent years has been made more positive– the beauty of imperfection, the beauty of things that are in flux, and the beauty that nothing will last forever.

This gardener's shed at Attingham park has been replaced by a newer model still in keeping with the surroundings. This one is beginning to rot and both back wheels have fallen off. You should also see that some branches have been blown down. They are left to rot naturally to fulfill the life cycle of Nature.

Of the two PiPs, they were both taken the previous week, one at Attingham and the other in Ruyton. The yellow fungus is Tremella mesenterica, the Yellow Brain Fungus, and is mainly seen in winter, when it appears on fallen branches of deciduous trees.

The Roman Baths are a well-preserved thermae in the city of Bath in Somerset. A temple was constructed on the site between 60-70AD in the first few decades of Roman Britain. Its presence led to the development of the small Roman urban settlement known as Aquae Sulis around the site. The Roman baths—designed for public bathing—were used until the end of Roman rule in Britain in the 5th Century AD. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the original Roman baths were in ruins a century later. The area around the natural springs was redeveloped several times during the Early and Late Middle Ages.

The Roman Baths are preserved in four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House, and a museum which holds artefacts from Aquae Sulis. However, all buildings at street level date from the 19th century. It is a major tourist attraction in the UK, and together with the Grand Pump Room, receives more than 1.3 million visitors annually. Visitors can tour the baths and museum but cannot enter the water, which is warm and smells of sulphur.

The water is sourced from rainfall on the nearby Mendip Hills, which then percolates down through limestone aquifers to a depth of between 2,700 and 4,300 metres (8,900 and 14,100 ft). Geothermal energy raises the water temperature here to between 69 and 96 °C (156.2 and 204.8 °F). Under pressure, the heated water rises along fissures and faults in the limestone, until it bubbles up from the ground into the baths. This process is similar to an enhanced geothermal system, which also makes use of the high pressures and temperatures below the earth's crust. Hot water at a temperature of 46 °C (114.8 °F) rises here at the rate of 1,170,000 litres (257,364 imp gal) every day, from a geological fault.. In 1982 a new spa water bore-hole was sunk, providing a clean and safe supply of spa water for drinking in the Pump Room. We visited the Pump Room for breakfast, but it was not possible to taste the water as the facility was closed.
