Margam Abbey

Margam Abbey was a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1147 as a daughter house of Clairvaux. Early Christian crosses found in the close vicinity suggest the existence of an earlier Celtic monastic community.

The Annales de Margan are a contemporary chronicle, beginning with the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066 and ending with Henry III's quarrel with Hubert de Burgh in the year 1232. The text gives accounts of the purported discovery of the bones of King Arthur, and of the alleged murder of Prince Arthur by King John.

The abbey was dissolved by King Henry VIII of England in 1536 and sold to Sir Rice Mansel. Significant holdings of the monastery library appear to have survived this event, including the manuscript of the annals. At this time, only 12 monks were living in the monastery. From the Mansel family the abbey eventually passed to their descendants in the Talbot family. In the 19th century, C R M Talbot constructed a mansion at Margam Castle which overlooks the abbey ruins. The nave of the abbey continued in use as the parish church, as it does to this day.

The remains of the 12-sided chapter house. Its roof stayed intact until 1799.

An early Sunday morning photo session outside Tata's Port Talbot steelworks. No stunning sunrise just half-light gradually increasing.

Morfa coke ovens closed in March, Blast Furnace 5 (on the right) closed in July and BF4 closed last weekend. This ends Port Talbot's ability to produce liquid iron from ore. Around 2,800 staff from Tata's 8,000 workforce stand to lose their jobs.

This is Kiplin Hall, in North Yorkshire, an intriguing Jacobean house. It was built for George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of Maryland, USA.

Since it was built way back in 1619, the house has belonged to four fascinating families, connected by blood or marriage, and some of the former owners even had royal connections.

The last owner was Bridget Talbot who from 1937 until 1958 tried to interest the National Trust in taking over Kiplin, but they remained largely indifferent, considering the Hall of little historical significance and insisting that the north and south wings, which were later additions, would have to be demolished - something Miss Talbot was very much against.

Then in February 1968, Miss Talbot set up the Kiplin Hall Trust, its purpose being to preserve Kiplin Hall for the benefit of the nation as a place historical and architectural interest. Bridget Talbot died in November 1971, leaving the contents of the Hall to the Trust, which still cares for the Hall and the surrounding estate today.

Not in as good a condition as the Porsche 944 from earlier or as dinky as the Mini Cooper, but still a rare and interesting find. As with most of the photos in this series it was spotted in Northallerton.

This is the second of these motorhomes I've seen in town over the last few months, but this one is in much poorer condition than the last.
