This view of Monument Valley is famous and impressive and many photographers have captured the scene.
However did you notice what is different on the image shown on the sign ?
Did you notice the shadow ?!

The timing & weather must be just right to align the setting sun to cast that shadow.

Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam form the 2nd largest reservoir in the US.
The Hoover Dam & Lake Mead are more famous because they are ranked #1.
Hoover dam is higher (726 ft to Glen Canyon Dam's 583 ft above the river)
Glen Canyon is wider (1560 ft to Hoover Dam's 1244 ft)
Hoover Dam's relative proximity to Las Vegas may also help to get more tourist visitors.

December 31st after sunset, this cascade of lights traveled across the rocky desert.
It was a group of (asian) students using their iPhones to light their way back to the parking lot.

This view is very iconic in summer.
Now in winter I find it even more attractive with snow adding contrast to the otherwise red-on-red landscape.
Traveling the scenic route is much more challenging at the moment with a mix of snow & ice and slush and muddy sand. My little 2WD would not have been able to make that trip.

In summer it is easier to hike up there. In winter daylight time is short and the round trip requires 4 hours of hiking. You have to leave at noon to make it back during daylight.

Canyons -- this time free of fog & clouds.
An amazing landscape even if it isn't breaking any records in terms of length or depth.
And IMO the snow adds to this scenery as it better highlights the rough cliffs instead of the all-red scene you will have in summer.

Be careful what you wish for -- my wish was for snow. But that comes with a whole lot of clouds & fog.
