Flood Tourists on the Vltava Embankment and the Most Legii, Prague, CZ, 2013

During the week of the 3rd-10th of June, 2013, Prague experience considerable flooding as a result of heavy rainfall. Following the much larger flood of 2002, Prague instituted several flood defense systems, which limited the damage this time around. Many tourists turned out to watch the River Vltava rise against the new aluminum flood walls, which look into the sidewalk on each embankment, although you can't see them in this shot. As you'll see later, they also had to be built for the Malostranska Metro station, as there was always the chance that the floodwater could leak into the Metro again and thus bypass the barriers on the embankments.

I've shot photos from this location many times before, but I figured I would give it one more try. I think the reflections in the harbor came out well in this shot. The harbor connects Podoli with the River Vltava, out of the frame to the right, which would be to the West. This view is rougly to the south from the parapet of Vysehrad.

Here's a view of the Narodni Divadlo, or National Theatre of the Czech Republic, seen from Strelecky Ostrov. The bridge next to the Theatre is the Most Legii, which crosses Strelecky Ostrov and is the primary way to access the island. I have many other photos on iPernity of this area.

This shot shows the area of Stare Mesto around the Karluv Most, seen on the left. The building with the clock tower is partly taken up by the Karlovy Lazne nightclub now, and the building to the left of it contains the Bedrich Smetana museum (or once did). These buildings were damaged in the recent Prague floods of June 2013.

This was my latest attempt at a Fall foliage shot of Zofin, an island in the River Vltava in Prague. Over in the distance on the right you can also see the Narodni Divadlo, or National Theatre. It would have been nice to get fewer greens and more yellows and oranges, but apparently Prague wasn't as far along when I took this as Cercany.

Turning further to the southwest, the Ministerstvo průmyslu becomes visible again, this time on the left, in addition to Tynsky Chram, which is just visible in the distance in the Stare Mesto.

Letna is a surprisingly short walk from NOD, so I walked across the river and up the hill, into the beer garden. I wanted to hang out there, but changed my mind and continued looking for photo opportunities, getting this somewhat gloomy shot of Stefanikuv Most and the Ministerstvo průmyslu (Ministry of Industry). It was actually a sunny day, but the sun was behind a cloud when I took this.

The Vltava, that is, the boat called "Vltava," is one of the older-looking boats in service on the River Vltava, although I don't know exactly how old it really is, or even if it's actually steam, the way its appearance suggests. I don't think I've ever even ridden on it. In this picture, it was docked for the winter.

While crossing the Vltava on the Manesuv Most, I used both the Ikoflex and the cameraphone, although strangely I preferred what the cameraphone gave me on this occasion.
